e-JR Voyager E > Would it hurt my ESC and Motor?

I'm a relative newbie and need some advice concerning the battery use on my VE.

My VE, which violently wobbled and was unable to lift off with 8-Cell 2200 NIMH battery, finally took off with 2 10-Cell 1100NIMH batteries connected parallel but the battery connector/ESC/motor get quite hot after a few minutes of easy hovering. I'm using JR NHM-540BL and NHA-300BL ESC and wondering if I am hurting my ESC and motor with these 10-Cell NIMHs.

Thanks in advance for any comment/advice.

Thanks for your comment:

>go brushless youll be alot happier.

However, I have said in my original post, I'm running
a brushless motor, "BL"s in "NHM-540BL" and "NHA-300BL"
stand for "Brushless". I wonder if you're saying that
I would still be burning my motor.

Well, I replaced the stock motor and the ESC with the ones I mentioned.

I've read somewhere that this combination were meant to be used with 3s lipos, whose voltage is 11.1V but I'm not yet ready to use lipo batteries.

Hello Akira,

Lipo is the way to go. I purchased 3 Cell 4400 Mah batteries from XUSHOBBY (which was suggested to me on this forum). They are cheap and you will get nice power and long flight times as well as remain within spec of your ESC.

This motor and ESC is an option with the latest VE kits. Nice to see the Voyager making a comeback.

Helijunky: the VE with brushless comes with a new sticker set too. Here is a link: http://www.macgregor.co.uk/newsletters/dec05.pdf scroll towards bottom for details.

Hi, Stack;

I know I'd be a whole lot happier with lipo batteries, but at the
moment my budget is rather tight and I don't think I can afford a
couple of lipos with the charger and balancer. Since nobody has
yet said that I'd do severe damage to my motor and ESC with the
NIMHs I'm using, I'll see what I can do with them for the time
being. Probably I will buy a few lipos from Kyosho when they release
their new batteries for their EP Caliber 400, though as usual with
them, I don't know exactly when :-) Maybe I can connect them in
parallel for my VE, too.

Hello Akira,

I understand. The lipos from XUSHOBBY sell for $69.00. Not bad if you already have a charger but since you don't then the additional cost might be an issue but definitely something to consider.

Anyway, I wish you luck with your VE. Post some pictures when you can.

Yes, that's a sad fact. BTW, when the connector / ESC / motor
heat up, would there be anything that I can do to help decrease
or slower the heat up process? Like a smaller pitch might help?

>Anyway, I wish you luck with your VE. Post some pictures when you can.

Thanks, I need it, and I will post a pic or two when I can have a
more stable hover.

Akira,

It is normal for NiMH and NiCAD batteries to get hot during use. The motor and ESC should not.

Akira,

OBP is correct. Also, I cannot find specs on your ESC to confirm that your batteries are too much for it. If all of your components are getting hot then I'd suspect that your batteries are out of spec. This could and probably will lead to ESC failure which is not a good thing.

If $ is an issue maybe you could just upgrade the ESC.

The manual that came with the ESC and the motor recommends the
use of 7-Cell NiCd or NIMH batteries, but the fact is that that
kind of batteries won't let the VE barely fly, giving it a bad
wobble.

>If $ is an issue maybe you could just upgrade the ESC.

Yes, I'm thinking of that as a very plausible option.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Hi, all those who have taken time to give me advice:

Here are some updates:

Things I've adjusted and their effects:

a) Loosening the tail belt
This seems to have had some good effects on the
ESC and the motor. They do not heat up so much
as they did.
b)Replacing the battery connector
The connector that came with the ESC and the motor
did not seem to handle high voltages well, and I've
replaced it with the one I had had lying around.
The new one does not heat up so much and I don't
have to worry about it getting too hot.
c) Decreasing the main rotor pitches at or beyond
the mid-stick.
Currently the pitches are about
mid-stick: positive 4 degrees
3/4 stick: positive 7 degrees
full-stick: positive 10 degrees

With these adjustments/replacements, the VE takes off
nicely and hovers well. I'm learning side-in hovers
and figure 8, which is still so ragged at the moment.

Modifications I'd like to do:

a) Replacing servos with mini-servos.
I've heard it'd help decrease the overall weight.
I'm wondering about the torque, though. How much
torque would be good enough for VE? Advice on this
will be appreciated.

b) Replacing the Main rotor blades
I've already ordered the JR glass-fibre blades.

c) Replacing the ESC
I'm wondering if there are any reasonable, easy-
to-use ESC available.

d) Batteries
I'm hoping that I'll be able to buy Lipo batteries,
a charger and a balancer in July.

Thanks again for all the repsonses

Very nice, glad you got it to work, how many minutes of hovering are the batterys giving you?

Hi,

Here's a pic of my VE BL, with the following options

1) Head parts from Quick Japan
Main rotor hub, seasaw, h-control levers, washout base and
washout arms
2) Main rotor bearing case from KSJ with a thrust bearing
3) 3 Mini servos (JR NES321 )
4) GY401 from Futaba
5) FRP Main rotor from JR

With these options, its flight time is 4 to 5 minutes on
a 9.6V 2200mah NiMH battery. There's very little wobble
and the ESC and the motor does not heat up, either.

Thanks for all the advice and comments.

Hi Akira

Could you tell me if your voyager E is the last version with only one main drive gear & carbon frame set ?

if yes, could tell me where I can get the manual of this voyager ?

Thanks a lot

Libellule:

>Could you tell me if your voyager E is the last version with only one >main drive gear & carbon frame set ?

I don't think mine is the one you are talking about. It was
originally the Fixed Pitch one called Voyager E FP, which I
later converted to an eCCPM version, replacing the maingear assy
and swashplate and some other parts.

>if yes, could tell me where I can get the manual of this voyager ?

If the one you're talking about is the one called Super Voyager E,
it hasn't yet hit the market and I don't think the manual is availabe.
I read somewhere that a Super Voyager was displayed in the RC Show
in Sizuoka, Japan, this year, but that there was no mention of the
date of its debut.
