I was wondering how many pilots would like a Portable Landing Pad for their Helo. Use it at the field or to show your bird off at your table. The Landing Pad would keep the tail blades from grounding out at some fields or flying locations by providing a flat, level surface. They can also aid in training of scheduled/controlled landings and/or making your scale Heli's look awesome. There will be 2 sizes, one for up to a 90 class or the Micro Pad for micro-mini birds up to a T-REX.

These would be made of a high density custom carpet mat with a non skid backing that is waterproof, mildew proof and fade resitant. The "H" can be either embroidered or silk screened to be more cost effective. Portable Landing Pad colors are still being approved.

Let me know your honest feedback as these will be distributed by companies such as Tower Hobbies, Horizon Hobby, Hobby Town, etc...

PICS TO FOLLOW UPON COLOR APPROVAL
Thank you for your time in helping us provide what YOU want.

Hi,

I picked up a 50x50 cm carpet tile at a local store for a couple of $'s. It is quite heavy and stiff and it is in my car all the time. Use it on asphalt and sandy places. Wouldnt pay too much for it though

Also thought about painting a H on it, but the guys at the field would probably laugh at me if I did that

What comes around goes around.

I think besides cool looks you need to weight it down or provide
some kind of anchoring as carpeting can easily lift up.
This is true especially on windy days, I use a piece of heavy carpet
that has a piece of rebar metal rod zip tied to each end.
When it was unweighted often it would it blow up or shift position ,
some times on auto's when flareing and landing or take off, also
the tail rotor thrust can lift it.
This was with 50-90 size heli's and can easily damage the tail blades or catch the heli skids etc. and possibly cause a tip over.
Using a carpet on un level or rough ground does'nt work too well either as it will jut up and cause the heli to be cocked over
allowing the tail to get too close to the carpet or surrounding ground, I know that from experience.

Anyway I hope these comments help you design a better version.

Here is what I made with a sheet 1/8" thick board I had laying around.
Obviously..something better would be used for our nitro birds!

It only takes two things to fly -- airspeed and money

So whatever happened with the landing pads? Wouldn't mind seeing a pic of what you've come up with so far.

not too bad, but I after looking your gallery, that looks to be a plastic skid, with some carpet on the top..Please tell me that is not what that is....
I like the idea, but it is not logical at all to carry around a skid to land on!!!

break it now and get it over with!

hmm... I have a couple old area rugs in my garage that I think would be perfect to use for landing pads... I don't know why I never thought of it before... hmph.. sweeeet!!

I have a friend who made a real nice pad out of a low profile lazy susan and a couple pieces of wood. One side had a circular pad, about 3 ft. in diameter. The other side has a smaller pad with the ability to lock your heli to it, and set up the tail wherever necessary. The pad spins with the heli, making it very useful.

why would you want to waste time and money making something like that. just find a suitable piece of grass to land on. ive been flying in my yard for over a year and havent had an issue with the tail striking the ground. yeah the blades get covered in grass guts but thats nothing a paper towell cant clean up.

No i havent flown before but I did stay at a holiday inn last night.

Ive been thinking of making a landing pad for quite some time. Where I live on Maui theres a lot of abandoned pineapple field grounds that is basically gigantic areas of unfarmed agriculture land. I was thinking of using a pallet and nailing a nice peice of plyboard to it and putting adjustable height legs on it so I could position it on unlevel terrain. Most pads I just looked at theres really no sense as your flying area is already a big landing pad.
In my case it would open opportunities for unlimited flying grounds.
