300 To train in....

I learned in a Hughes 269C (Schweizer 300). It's a fun helicopter, much easier than an R22. However, compared to a Bell 47, it auto-rotates like a manhole cover. Also, if your ever going to move on to a JetRanger, the Bell 47 feels almost the exact same (the G-models have Hydrolics).

Not convinced about autorotations? Ask your instructor if he's willing to try a full left-peddle autorotation in a 300. If he says yes, then you better get nervous cause you are about to die. Doing this manuver in the 47 is a blast; it was a technique used in Korea to loose altitude fast to aviod being Intercepted by enemy aircraft and shot down.

Anyways, you may not be able to find a 47 to train in, I wish they still made them!

Autos

Yes, the first few are very scarey. Then doing them on your own is scarey. Then doing your first "Full-Down" autos (no power recovery) are scarey; unless your in a Bell 47! It's easier to do a full-down auto in one than a power recovery since it takes the blades so long to spool-back up to the green range.

After a while, you'll start to loose your fear of autos, thats when you should start to worry

Ps... Don't get me wrong, I do love the 300! I just think 47's would be an awesome ship to learn in.

the instructor is starting groung school somtime in May,but doesn't know what day.

The place that i'm going learn to fly at is called
( First flight Aviation)

Ive still got to get all the books and a headset but I can get a headset when I get closer to flight training.

I gess this means i'm not going fly my RC models for a whilethe cool thing is is that the instrutor whants to learn how to fly RC helis
He teaches me how to fly full scale and I'll teach him how to fly RC

The 300 is a great heli. i have around 400hrs in type. I think sometimes i rather fly it than the MB K117 i fly. I have to say i think i have done about 100 left pedal auto's with no issues but than again i was 16 at the time and death was no issue also

i had one of the best instructors. Les hembel he was the first to bring hughes tool company to the southeast we also did backwards autos, power off auto from a 100 feet ,pull the mixture yes no engine. Yes i thought the man was insane also. But it came in to good use when i had a 300 throw a rod and had to auto from 250 feet and there was no damage to the heli and i didnt have to clean my underware out Also he would put his foot behind the right pedal during left 180 auto's

Left peddle autos v. left 180 degree auto....

Doing a left 180 degree auto is a lot different than a full left peddle auto while doing left turning piroettes straight down (with the nose at a downward attitude).

The Showcopters stunt guys run a flight school in Salinas. They'll teach you all the insane stuff in their "Unusual attitude/spacial awareness" class; something that I'd love to go do! My expereince was from a semi-crazy instructor with a 47 (I grew to love that old heli, which now lays in pieces in a FAA boneyard somewhere....)

Headsets

The Boise are at the top of the line; they sell a helicopter version for about $1K. After that, the Denali ANR set works pretty well for a little less than half that. You should be able to find them at sporty's.

David Clark H10-60's if you can find them.
They have an interchagable cord so you can use them in airplanes or helicopters.
Work great for me and they are over 14 years old. Still going strong.
A whole lot less than those ANR setups and IMO they work just as good.
I have flown IFR in 172's without any issues with them and in the Helicopter they were just fine.
I like to hear what the engine is doing anyhow. With those ANR's you loose some of that IMO.

Huh?? The 44 in a 90 knot, 90% RPM auto glides almost as well as a Cessna 172... Autos in a 44 are almost a non-event.. VERY JetRanger like. Even the little 22 glides pretty well at 75kts and 90%. I did a bunch of autos in a 22 yesterday including a 360 left turning auto at about 30kts until about 500 AGL when I pushed over to 50 kts for the flare. Very fun...

The 300 autos like a rock in comparison.

MAVRICK: David Clark H10-13H is a decent helo headset and can be had for less than $300. The H10-56XL is about $650 and has ANR.. The H10-60 has already been mentioned and it's also a good unit. (Can you tell I'm partial to David Clarks?)

A helicopter is 10,000 parts spinning rapidly around an oil leak.

I was talking about the r-22. It is a flying brick no doubt. There is two flight schools around here that wont even let you do a full touch down auto in a r-22 as they are afraid of the stress on the frames. As this has been a issue on some r-22's. The r-44 is very much like an bell. As you can tell im not a fan of the robinson. I have been flying helicopters for 16 years and the hughes 269 series as alot better record than the r-22 or r44. I know a lot of people who fly the r-22 because of the cheap maintance, but like i always say you get what you pay for
