I am mostly running 30 &50 size helo's but am saving up for my first 60 ( more than likely an X-cell) And am curious about the YS engines .My question go's to there lack of a heat sink head. While every other engine out there has these massive heads YS doesn't. Anybody know the why's and where for about this. I have used YS engines for years in my planks prior to getting into helos and always got good service out of them.

Well it is obviously not needed. I run the st2 and so does several of my friends and I have never heard of any problems !! it is one great running engine!! the best ?? but a very strong and reliable one. Rob

Agreed. On the YS80, no overheating problems at all. The freya doesn't even have a fan shroud covering the head.

have pondered the question too .. pre st's were rounded heads . heli's are small sq but not sure if a machined head like pre ys st's and os stays cooler than a sq cast head ..

airplane motors had no sq head either .. who knows .. airplanes get cooled twice from the prop and forward air flow ..

the heli fan must really be generating alot of air flow thru the shroud for it not to need a a sq for heat dissipation .. the oil mix content does the rest of the cooling ..

Being a short stroke engine probably has something to do with it.

Head

Color of head probably has something to do with it. Look at radiators...painted flat black. Wish I knew the physics of how a color can make the difference..maybe it's anodized black. I do know that wearing a black shirt in summer time makes me hotter though

You are Da Man!! I've been looking for this since Mt. Pleasant FF. I had a long discussions about this and was confused about how a black surface could gain heat and release it faster than other shiny surfaces (tuned pipes for example) I know from experience that the black alumn. pipe cools off much faster than a shiny alumn. one! You have cleared it up for me and I do appreciate it very much!!
