Bergen R/C Helicopters > RX batt choice for new EB?

Since this is my first non-elec. heli and I generally used standard servos and smaller batteries on the planks I flew, I'm unsure what kind of capacity I aught to have onboard my EB. I'm running all Futaba digitals. I'm intending to primarily fly it for AP. Camera equip. to have seperate power. Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

For AP work, using digital servos, We can recommend 3 things.

A dual redundant battery system called a pow'r back'r from electrodynamics (electrodynam.com),

Or,

Running a generator, for instance like the one from rbort here on RR.

Or,

A Duralite system using one of their 4000Mah LiIon batteries and 5.3 regulator.

As a minimum, use at least an 1800Mah, sub "C" pak. This should give at least a couple of flights before needing to be recharged.

I run the Duralite system on mine, I have never had any issues to date. Wouldn't do it any other way, but as Chris said there are several ways to go just don't take the easy cheap way out!!

The two options I am considering are:
1. 3700mAh sub c pack from Hangtime Hobbies
2. 4800mAh Fromeco with their regulator

What I like about the Fromeco is it is a parallel pack giving you some redundancy and the regulator uses a pin flag (no switch to go bad). But you get what you pay for.

Both of those should work well also, Just don't lose the flag!!

Chris,

Will rbort's "jewel" generator fit on the Gasser?

It does, but some sort of bracket needs to be made up to attach it to the frames.

Haven't gone to the checkout the Fromeco. Pin flag?

The Arizona regulator from Fromeco is always on when plugged in to the battery. They have an option to add a pin flag which is just a pin with a flag attached that is inserted into a jack to kill the power to the regulator.

I use a jr3000 4 cell and rbort's generator on my Intrepid camera ship and a seperate jr1800 4 cell for the down-link.
Great results with this set-up.
My non-camera ship is using the Power back system I purchased from Bergen, which is two 1800 5-cell threw a regulator that drops the volts.
I have digitals on my nitro ship, but both Intrepids use 9202's with a 9206 on the collective with no problems

Charger,

Can you post a picture of the mount for the generator on the Intrepid.

I have used Duralite 4000mah pack from the start. It has been a great system. The regulator works great. It is a higher end system put I think it is worth it. The charging sytem is plug and play.

I might have missed it on the website but did that have a Futaba available?
Thanks

Everything is available for most radio systems including Futaba.

Use a set of GP or IB sub-C racing batteries. They have low internal resistance (5 milli-ohms), high capacity (3300-4000 mAh) and balance the heli pretty well.

If you're worried about a pack or a switch failing, you could always wire two in parallel with separate power switches.

I do like the redundancy idea. I checked out the pwr bkr Chris suggested. I can't help but wonder if that isn't something that could be accomplished by a couple diodes. Heli could feed off both but a failure couldn't short the good pack. Would be inexpensive to put together.

I just looked at that Pow'r Back'r. It sounds almost like a LiPo balancer circuit, except that it's used to keep two packs balanced with each other by using the bird's electronics as the current sink.
