Hi guys,
I am in the process of building an Avant from stock plastic Freya 70(Eurpoe spec). Engine of choice is Ys 80 on MPII cause I had one. Ratio I have chosen is 97/12 to give 8.08 - throws up my first question : Are M4 washers good enough for shimming engine off mount for this ratio, and how much play should I have ? As it is with washers if I hold clutch bell there is maybe just under 0.5mm of movement on main gear. I have been advised to tighten it to almost no play.

Next is there any problems with using the stock plastic blade grips upsidedown for the leading edge conversion ? Any strength/loading issue, i.e. loading the grips in a manner which they were not designed ?

I plan to run 690 V-Blades, should I run with the two M3 washers and inside ball for delta angle ?

Regarding head dampening, I have a set of CX micro rigid crisp but have elected to run standard soft freya dampers initially, then I read all the stuff about problems with CX dampers in the plastic head yoke and am slightly concerned - any advice ?

I have been away from heli flying about 6 months so would appreciate any info or advice people have gained from running the avant since it has come on the scene, I have checked the CX site and there does not seem to be any updates or advice. The only complaint I would have is that when putting roll-pin through the CX tail pulley shaft, the shaft snapped across the hole, reason being the hole for pin was off centre leaving it weak one side, just glad it failed on the bench !

Thanks for reading.

"Are M4 washers good enough for shimming engine off mount for this ratio"

Yes they are enough.

"how much play should I have ? As it is with washers if I hold clutch bell there is maybe just under 0.5mm of movement on main gear. I have been advised to tighten it to almost no play"

That play is ok. That play is designed by Hirobo in their gears. The spacing in the Avant is identical to the one in the Hirobo EX.

No no problems at all. They are symetrical anyway.

"I plan to run 690 V-Blades, should I run with the two M3 washers and inside ball for delta angle ?"

Outside Ball for delta and two to three washers.

The problem only applies to the EVO-90 yoke having molding defects not the standard freya yoke. Stock dampeners run the risk of boomstrikes.

Sorry about that. Please contact customer service for a free replacement since I can't tell who you are by the screen name here on RR.

Augusto.

Thanks Augusto,
What I really meant to ask about the M4 washers was ... is it acceptable to have the engine bearing down on these 4 washers instead of having the very solid contact you would have on the machined mount without them ? Or in other words, should I remove the washers and actually shim it with shim plate cut to size.

Regarding the delta spacing, what is the thinking behined the different positions - is it dependent on the blade characteristics ? Why the outside balls ?

Regarding the tail pinion shaft, I ordered two the night it broke which was around christmas, so thats done and dusted. Thanks anyway.

No need to do that. The four points of supports hold it in place correctly. That's the way we all fly the 8.08 ratio.

The inner ball in the leading edge configuration is too aggressive. That settings is only used for the trailing edge configuration. The leading edge one uses the outer ball and it's shimmed to your liking starting with two shims. Less shims makes it more pitch aggressive and more tame it down.
