Graupner Koala-Bell 230-Elektro Skaler > Augusta 109 Tail drive.

Hi all,

Which tail drive do you use in your 109's. 1) The piano wire drive. 2) Carbon rod with central support, or 3) Metal rod/shaft from the Uni 2000 pod and boom kit.
I have read that you can install the metal shaft/boom from the uni 2000 complete with out having to support it in the middle. The boom is secured to the mechanics and then just rests on the rear bulk head that the tail rotor g/box mounts to.

Which do you use and why. Which is best?

Thanks,
Stephen.

I've used a carbon rod with a bearing supported by a former in the fuselage. The tail drive has been constructed from two minair drives joined with a carbon insert to get the length necessary to run from the mechanics to the tail gearbox.

On the Agusta the best set-up is the wooden channeled rail tail drive.
When this system is installed it gives a smooth tail drive.
If you have got the kit new all the parts should be there to run this system, personally I wouldn't use any other method.

Michael

hi

if you want the best preformance i would use the carbon conversion.i think the graupner one is about £100,but i do know that MARTIN BRIGGS MODELs have put a set together for about £60 and it realy is very good. The wire drive is fine, but should you ever decide to any aerobatics or fast forward flight(which the A109 loves) the carbon conversion is the best opt.

In my opinion there is nothing looks more stupid than a scale heli doing aerobatics!

Nobody asked me but since RR is for discussion/opinions I voiced my opinion, if you don't like it I'm afraid that is too bad.

What do you call aerobatics? inverted flight ect.?or stall turns and autos?
either way, i know that i would prefer a heli that can stand up to as much as the day can throw at it with out it falling appart- what i am saying is i prefer as much reliability as possible.

besides airwolf can do loops! and thats a Real heli!!!!!!

Aerobatics, loops, rolls, stall turns or whatever are of no interest to me but I don't think that the autrotation could be considered an aerobatic manoeuvre more of a recovery from engine failure.
On the subject of reliability would have thought that flying a reliable/safe heli goes without saying.

Tail drive

I use the wooden channel that came with the fuse. Cheep effetive and smooth as silk. No need for overkill. And I am with skypilot. Fly it scale if it is a scaler. Save the hot crazy stuff for something that is a bit easier to fix. My 2 cents. Okay bash me now!

I think the wire drive ain't that bad. It just depends on how much performance you want. Just for the test I upgraded my uni stars bit by bit. Last year I got my first HH gyro , a graupner jr G550T. Installed it with the rest as it was: wire drive and a ds8041 servo on the tail. It was like "okay and now?". That "now" became lenghtening the servo rod and that made a huge improvement.
The tail would actually lock in hoover now except for very turbulent winds.
Next step: I got me the ds8100G servo. Well other than I thought, little better performance (locking)and the gyro gain can be turned up.
The next step will be to put the gyro and servo combo in my uni with a pipe drive or make a pipe drive for the uni star in which it is in now. I dont expect to much extra performance........

The tube pipe or carbon drive are only interesting when using HH gyro's . Scale ships are often flown without HH gyro's, So I think the piano wire fits just well.

Just my 2 cents (so that I won't get bashed)
