Will the avant frame hold up better in a crash than the evo 90 frames? I have an evo 90 and 50 now but have been thinking of going to two 90's. I have not crashed the 90 yet, knock on wood. anyone crashed both?

I have had one crash with the Avant in 11 months...it free fell about the length of two city light posts/60feet and the only thing that broke was the bottom plate under the engine in regards to the frame set and one strut from the landing gear. I was not really surprised by that because the frameset seemed heavy duty during the build but I did feel better after experiencing the free fall. The Avant really has a hardcore frameset, don't let it worry you.

Thanks Pete, that is very good to hear. The only thing that worried me about the avant frame was the crash cost compared to the freya evo. The solid aluminum landing gear mounts look bullet proof along with the carbon frames but I wanted to hear some real world reports. So would I be right to think that the evo in the same situation would have broken more frame?

My AVANT went in pretty hard on the runway during the Mulberry funfly when the tail gave out, and the frames held up fine.

They are buttoned up pretty good, with the aluminum landing gear mounts.

We have 5 Avants flying at our field and I've seen maybe 10 crashes...
Usually the main frame gets damaged at the front canopy mounting post (usually it can be repared with epoxi).
Other than that usually the battery tray goes as well.
That's about it for the frame.

The fix for the front canopy mounts is to put a spare frame spacer between the front mounts and that removes much the brake out for the frame in a crash. Use long set screws to mount the canopy pins.

ok

now you guys are making me want one! So other than the frame the crash cost will be the same as an evo 90. Very tempting

Can you post a picture of an example of what you mean when adding a spacer? And is this a fix for the FX or EFX or both?

thanks,

Nas,

Nas...it's a aluminum frame spacer that is used through out the Avant heli to keep frames together. You can also use a nylon m3 bolt for the standoff.

I hit the run way pretty hard with mine. Broke every carbon part on this machine except one frame reinforcement. All said an done, I spent 700 to repair every thing. This crash was caused by a screw vibrating loose on the lower bearing block. It backed out just enough to jam my front/elevator servo.(yes I did use locktite) It hit nose first and hit hard enough to damage the head on the motor. It made me think allot about this heli. Here are a few of my thoughts:

1. It flys awesome. Best I ever tested.

2. Crashing costs more than EVO 90 because CX parts are expensive. It would have been allot less to buy a EVO 90 frame set.

3. I will fly it again, but be very careful about checking screws after each flight. Also used red instead of blue on bearing block screws.

4. This is still my favorite heli by far!

tomthumb,

Why didn't you just buy another Avant kit. I couldn't imagine spending $700 on individual parts when the conversion kit is $585. I'm sure some of the EVO 90 parts got damaged but you could of had another new Avant kit with a bunch of spares.

I spent just over 300 at carbon extreme. It was right at that 1/2 mark that is so hard to decide on.

130 for main blades

30 for tail blades

hirobo crash parts 150

new head for my motor 90

You get the idea right??

I read yah... These things aren't cheap no matter how we try and look at it . $700 did seem like a more than usual though.

Crash landed very hard & broke bottom of frames & bottom plate as well as bending strut metal blocks. The only Hirobo parts replaced were tail housing, spindle, flybar & struts.

Cost about $500 all up but my FX became an EFX sooner than planned!!

The frames are the most expensive parts & you want them to survive crashing! Full rebuilds take up too much time.

Sure it's expensive but worth it, nothing comes close to this badass machine. I'm selling my X-Spec as no longer like flying it.
