Scale Model RC Helicopters > Vario XLV petrol trainer !

Hello !

Anybody tried to fit the Vario XLV petrol trainer into the Jet Ranger XL for the turbine mechanic. Vario have just launched a bigger Zenoah, so maybe the chances are now bigger with respect to performance/weight ratio !

XLV into XL Jet Ranger

Peter B
I have just checked the distance from base plate to swash plate (in the hover)
Turbine Jet Ranger 17 inches 430mm
Petrol XLV 16 inches 407mm
Petrol R22 16.5inches 420mm

This means that the XLV mechanics will slip into theXL Jet Ranger body with room to spare.
Not seen this new Engine yet I heard it was 39cc?if so it would do the job easily

Peter !

Thanks for you answer and measurements. I asked Vario earlier and they indicated that the performance was insufficiant with the 230 engine so I believe it could be done now.

Peter ! Do you take the tail off the 1/4 Jet Ranger when you transport it !

The reason for my question is that my new Cobra with PHT3 suddently becomes so big when I transport it, even though it is in the low end of scale turbine size..

Regards

Transport

No I leave the tail on, I bought a Mercedes Vito van, when I bought the 1/4 scale, the Vito has the gear stick mounted in the facia and there is no hand brake on the floor to get in the way, I know what you mean about moving into the bigger scale, my new project is a 3 metre long Martin Solner fuz, I have not measured the van yet
I did take the tail off a couple of times, about 6-10 mins to take off and 30 mins to put back on, if you cut the access panel on top it may be faster

I just saw the 29cc for 719$ or is there a bigger one coming out? I dont know if 29cc is enough power to lift it and fly it?

Test flight

Greg, Good luck with the first flight, do not forget the headspeed is only 835 or there abouts and it is really scale like in its response to stick movements
My XLV has the standard 230cc Zenoha with the upgrade kit takes it to about 25.5cc handles the XLV no problems at all

thanks for the kind words. I know about the headspeed thing. the big bell 47 head speed is 740. I think it will all go well. do you know if the auto start will work on the rc260? it says on vario site that it is for 230 only/

Electric start for 230

Greg
The electric start works on the 230 and on the 230 upgraded, as it comes with its dedicated flywheel, it was simple enough to transfer from the XLV to the R22

test flight

Finaly got to test fly the XLV. It has the rc260 in it. First flight was great. come off the ground and only needed alittle left trim. Got it all trimed and away she went. Made 3 or 4 laps around the feild then brought her down. Very smooth for a first flight. Flew it 3 more times with the same great stable flights. On the 5 flight I was flying it around when the nose started to go to the right by itself. I gave it left t/r and it still was going right. It did a 360 and then i got it to stop by holding alot on left in it. i got it on the ground a.s.a.p.. It dont hurt anything so I started looking it over at the feild and have found nothing wrong. Everything on the heli is new. I just hope that I dont have one of the 401 gyros with a mind of its on. Now that its home i'm going to go over it very close. Will report what I find wrong (if i find it).

XLV Turning right

Greg
Same thing happens on a lot of big scale, look to the tail servo it needs to be a lot higher torque
If I apply too much pitch the XLV wants to turn this has to be corrected with rudder
There is a difference of opinion on this I do not like heading hold gyros on scale, Peter Wales is the oposite, I prefer to fly with the lowest gain possible and fly with the least amount of pitch travel nessesary to fly the machine in safety (in hold I have the full pitch range)
The 230 puts out a lot more torque than the 230 wait for the 290, I have one on order for theXLV

t/r servo

I have a 100oz servo on the tail. i dont think the servo is the problem. the big bell 47 only has around 75oz servo on tail with no problems at all. I'm going to play with the gyro and see what happens. do it heading hold and none heading hold.

I hope you have some nice big tail blades on there. I have found that with HH gyros on a scale heli with a low headspeed, they drift around all over the place. The solution is to mechanically trim it out in the hover so there is no rudder trim in the Tx and then if you go to HH it doesn't drift.

Other things to check are battery voltage and tail rotor drive line integrity, no slipping gears or couplings.

I like HH all the time so I dont have to worry about the tail, but like Peter R I use comparatively low gain as I dont do much high speed backwards with a scale heli
