Mark,
I don't want to be a whiner, or start a war, but I have a question about posting etiquette. In December of last year you stated that any posts with vulgar language, sexual innuendo etc will be deleted or closed. I have been using RR for a few months now and the wealth of knowledge and information provided here is immeasurable. I am in the process of teaching my 12 yo. son about R/C Helos and have encouraged him to read all he can including posts here on RR. However, recently there have been quite a few posts with pretty descriptive sexual innuendo, language etc. that I would prefer he not read. I am sure that he has probably heard worse in the 7th grade, but I would like to do my best to set and enforce limits on his exposure to this. I do not want to limit his access to RR simply because some members cannot keep their innuendo / language toned down. I do not know what your process for moderating is, overall I would commend you on a job well done and would recommend this site to anyone including their children. I just hope some courtesy could be extended to not only the adults that allow their children to view this site, but also the chldren / teens that are members. Thanks.

I agree!!! I have seen many members offer to moderate this site. Is there a problem with their offer? Is moderating something that would take any technical experience, or just commen sense and some free time? I am new to this hobby, yet I have a grasp on what would be appropriate, and what would not. I wish that some posts would be deleted not just ended, is this difficult to do? Not to cut in on the first amendment and all but I think the founding fathers neglected to take into account the regression of common sense in such a technologically advanced society.

I will delete it as fast as it is brought to my attention. I do not read every post on the site so if somthing slips by me please let me know.

I appreciate the reply. Again good job and I in no way think that you can block or delete every one as quick as they come in.

You can't get them all...

Mark deletes it and just as fast the person who thinks it is funny post's another one or starts this big flaming post about it.
Sad to say, but the best course for most of it is to just ignore it. Don't reply and let it fall to the bottom of the pile.
Just look right now it has already started about the last couple that popped up here. "How come you deleted mine when so and so's is worse and still here.........Yada Yada Yada"

I agree with Jason, these people are just a different version of a TROLL.... If we leave them to pick their noses then they will get tired and move on...non response is the best medicine in this case.

Good Advice

Thanks. I do not have any problem ignoring it, it was just that my son was saying what is that or, what does that mean? I guess I will have to sit down & teach him about The " Bozos & the Trolls". Every parent dreads having to have that conversation with their kids, but no time like the present.

Soo true...

Sad to say that this hobby requires that "talk" at a bit earlier age than normal. I had to have a modified version with my 6 and 5 year olds before we went to the fun flys.
Thank goodness I run with a good bunch of family oriented guys and the kids stay close to them.

Food for thought? Who is dirtier than the ministers daughter? Education is the key. Hang out at any bus stop, school corner, coffee shop, lord forbid you ever turn on the television. I agree with you one hundred percent. I believe that a educated approach is one thousand times more effective than trying to shield some one from something offensive? The world is to large and full of too many people not to have an educated approach. Not to mention, when I was twelve, if you wanted me to do something I didn't want to do. Simply tell me that I couldn't do it.

Your point is well taken, I hope that mine will be as well. Education and knowledge are the answers! So, when/if you are not there to cover your kids ears-eyes and others senses they will know how to deal with these issues themselfs.

This might prove to be useful later in life as well?

Remember kids are hereditary.... If your parents didn't have them, than you won't either.

I know I would have been a little better off at twelve if my peers didn't pretend some things in life that they felt that I was not ready for didn't exist. Little did they know that I already knew they existed. Sooner than later your kid/s will discover that they do exist as well, and how nice would that be if you/they were prepared/educated? What do you suspect this will do to the credibility of your other advice? Have you ever heard the Steve Martin tape about how he likes to talk "mumble dog fish down by the bannana patch" to his kids. He jokes about speaking to his kids in phrases that make no sense at all. He thinks it is funny to confuse them at such an early age..............Sounds to me like job sequrity for all of those theripists in the world today.
Pardon the spelling I was slighty deprived of part of my ejukation wen I was yunger.

Do I smell the smoke of a good old fashioned book burning?
Or is it the flames from the fire that the "Flat earth society" started with all of the globes and maps of the world.
I would like to end this note with a rather ironic quote from this topic starter.

Mark

I think you may be missing something, I got more "hits" when I searched for the word **** than when I did a meaningful search on mufflers.

It may be a mild form of crudity but an example of what could probably be easily edited out in software ??

Mark,
What is the feasability of a program that would "edit" out generally unacceptable or vulger words?
Sounds like a good indea to me? I for one think most educated people can discuss something without using vulgar language so the program should be seemless to most users.

OK no more **** (s_h_i_t). Is this what you want? Until today there were no censored words at RR.

And if I censor ****, then what else will I need to add to the censored list? I do not like where this is going. I say let peer pressure control the members actions here at RR.

Either way...

I can live with it either way. Just thought the censored words would be easier for you to moderate. Just the more common ones that everyone takes offence too. I don't think we need to list them all out or anything.
Like I have said before your site do as you wish.

Mark R you are doing just fine. There are software programs that the USERS can install on THEIR PCs that edit all foul language. Soooooo if they feel that this site OR any other site is TOO vulgar then get the software yourself and fix it for good. Gee, now that didnt hurt so bad did it? Its a big world education at home and parental software will protect your lil ones UNTIL they turn on the TV, or go to public school, or disappear from sight for a second. I dont think this site on the whole has anything to have to edit all of the sudden to protect anyone. The internet is exactly what it is and always will be, its up to MATURE,RESPONSIBLE adults(parents) to see that the siblings are monitored not the entire web..............................
