I tried this at a recent fun fly, and it was a real crowd pleaser. Here is the picture:

a friend of mine has a x-cell gasser with a HUGE flag for it. you never let it hit the ground did you?its bad luck if you did. then you have to burn the flag. i catch it every time he lands. hes got another servo to drop it. its prety amazing standing under it!

Eric.. looks very nice.. i attempted one time but i think i put too much weight as the sinker.. heli wobbles badly.. I didn't have the emergency release system.. ended up coming down with flag wrapped on the blades.. maybe next time i should try less weight and an emergency release system.

Hi Naomi

I used a 12" x 16" flag, attached to about 5 feet of nylon cord, anchored with 3 large fishing sinkers, probably weighing about 6 oz. I added a bit of music wire to the top and front of the flag to keep it out straight and from tangling up on the cord. I just zip tied the cord to the rear skid. It worked out well - but you do have to be careful flying so that the load does not start swinging. It helped to fly forward fast, as this put drag on the flag and kept it from swinging.

Another pic from my website..

Great.. Thanks for the tips.. I think my flag is a lot bigger dimension than yours. I should try something a little smaller then..

That's a monster flag, Alan!

Mine tows pretty well in fast forward flight. When cornering fast, you can swing the weight out around the apex, kind of like riding a bermed turn on a bike, to turn tightly. The top picture is in FFF, about 35-40 mpg. The sinkers provide enough weight to keep the flag hanging below the copter and prevent the line from getting tangled in the tail rotor. This is my second setup - the first time I tried it I didn't have any music wire on the flag to keep it straight and it kept getting wrapped around the line.

I zip tied the cord to the rear skid brace, which is a bit behind the CG, so I thought it would be best to anchor it there as drag force would tend to raise the nose in FFF. Actually, I left the zip tie loose, and the line could shift freely from left to right on the skid brace, but that didn't seem to matter a bit.
