Bergen R/C Helicopters > Bergen EB on floats

Yesterday I tested some floats I got from Gary Travis for the first time on snow. There was about a 4 or 5 inch base with about 6 or 8 inches of soft powder snow. They held up fine and are extremely durable. Even in Idle up 2 full negative on the ground I could not get them to sink. Climbouts and circuits were a breeze. I could not even tell a difference when I took them off and just used stomped out place to take off. I was there with gary when he tried all the different designs and finally got one that would not get the shakes but was still able to float it. It took many hours and starting from scratch a few times but he finally got a pair going. So for all those winter fliers out there who have been grounded by fresh snow or only have a body of water to take off from go a ahead and drop Gary an email or PM and he can hook you up with a pair. He told me he is going to have a website up soon, but for now just PM him.

Here are some pictures I cut out of the video my friend shot when I was flying. They are a little bit blury and pixelated from zoom and the grey skies.

These are the same floats used by the Cook Nuclear Power Plant on their EB used for flying out over Lake Michigan. They wanted something that would prevent the bird from sinking in case of a water landing. (No, they haven't tried it yet.....)

They also make great training gear for larger models with that LARGE footprint.

Glad they work on soft snow, I didn't think of the training gear application. I am currently finishing up some 60 size floats. It should be a blast, now I can go Duck chasing!!

I don't live in the west valley, but on the east side we sure do get snow!! Not that I like snow that much, I guess I just deal with it.

Thats cool Tristan. I was wondering what people do for snow flying. I bought work out room flooring made of dense foam that connects together in about two foot sections. I connected four of them and lay that thing down over dirt, dry grass, gravel, snow, things like that to keep the FOD down. Makes a pretty good heli-pad but it wont help me with an auto into water like the floats would! I like'um

Chris/Gary,
Do either of you know whether anyone has attempted to put that big mutha down on the water for real yet....maybe Cook NP as training. Would love to see some video or even photos of that...better yet, how about a Bergen turbine on floats....man, I hate to even consider the possibilities.

Doc, Yes I have put it down in the water many times, I whent trough the trial and era phase when first building them. I tried different sizes and lengths before getting them right. In landing on water it was a learning experience in itself, the landings are easy. Take offs you have to realy control the tail, other than thaat I had no problems floating the heli (Bergen EB) the only problem was nerves!!

just a though

Gary,
I would much rather use real float landing gear than just a pool noodle that has been cut. check this picture out.
just a thought I know this is scale but looks a lot better....
I think skies would look better than the noodles for the winter don't you?

Those look like the blow up ones which don't last to long, The yellow floats are not the standard noodles that you buy in the store, they are 4 1/2 inch diameter and alot denser. With the weight of the gasser the standard noodles would not work.

noodles

Gary, were can we get your noodle?().
I live up here in New Engand (were the guy's threw the tea in the water)and fly off the lake across the street from my house when it freezes over and up the road at a old dairy farm,If they can keep my intrepid ontop of the snow on take-off and landing I could do more flying and less shoveling

Tried the big boss noodles they work great if you want a submarine, You have to get some that are a little denser, I guess if you put four of the pool noodles it mite work.

I tried some and they are pretty long, even at that I don't think they will. Keep in mind you will be cutting them dow to size for the floats. Itried a couple of different brands before I found the ones I used.
