I'm done with the airframe! Finally!!!!

The mixer turned out to be the biggest challenge. The 3 axis Gyro had to be reset to function is it's supposed to due to using a JR Tx rather than the default Futaba. At least it seems as though it's set up correctly by checking for swash motion while rocking it fore and aft, left and right, and swinging it yaw.

Setting all of the 6 blade pitch angles to 0* at 50% was just a joy
At least now I can give it its first test flight to see where I might have gone wrong.
Anyway there's more photos in my gallery.

nice pictures, when and where are you going to try to test fly this thing. are you a little nervous? i just payed for my new canopy from arizona heli so my raptor will finally look as good as it flys. i am hoping it helps me feeling more comfortable in forward flight with its bright colors.

The last thing a $150.00 canopy will do is make you MORE comfortable

I may give it a whirl tomorrow but definately this weekend. Once I verify that it's flight worthy then its on to the detailing of the fuse! I'm at 15 hours from start to finish on just the airframe. I imagine I'll be a while on the fuse but I don't see myself going to the extent some of the masters go to.

lookin good DG, just to make you a little more nervous the "canopy" on the vertol unpainted without shipping is $550, painted I believe is 2 bills more.... hows that for pucker factor? good job man and good luck on the test flight... just an Idea for ya, go to home depot get some dowel rods and zip tie em to your frames (fore and aft) with the requisite wiffleballs to give ya a little security till you get her dialed in....and if you ever need blades pm me I may be able to help with that....I gotta "crash kit" with mine that I'm not real fond of parting with but would if you ever needed....

Said in my best Dr. Frankenstien voice:

It's Aaalliiiiive!!!!

Couldn't wait to bring it to the field so I fired it up in the driveway. Looks like I got lucky with the 3 axis gyro. It flew as predicted. Once it's spooled up it takes off front end first then the rear lifts off requiring rear elevator to keep it from rolling foreword on a smooth surface. I only hovered it at about two feet since my Jetta would have suffered dearly.

One cool point note, you can raise the front end and roll it backwards on the rear wheels while steering it with the aileron. How slick is that?

I'll have a video of it in the air to post tonight!

Problem!

When I installed the motor I noticed a fair bit of play between the pinion and main gear but there is no way that I could see to adjust it out. Sure enough after a 20 or so second flight the main gear let go. I got it down without any problems at all and rather softly. It sucks now because I can't fly it this weekend.

BTW, it was windy as hell and it flew really well despite the wind. I was impressed. The short but very cool video will be up soon.

Now to see if any of the gears I have lying around can be modified to work short term!

That's my only choice right now. It's a 77 tooth delrin gear. I'll be grounded until next weekend.

However, I did receive my Starwood light kit today Looks like it's time to start on the fuse details!

Dang sorry to hear that, you know check the delrin EVO gears....while I didnt throw a mic on it and check dimentions (nor did I count the teeth) Hirobo has a wonderful knack of making parts that fit different sizes and styles of their heli's, for instance I have a freya 90 collective tray on my evo 50....was a bolt up install. I also have shuttle plus Quick UK washout arms on my evo .50.... AND I have the shuttle plus Quick UK tail slider assembly on my (cough cough) raptor 90....the gears look the same, if you got someone close in the neighborhood that could hook you up with one...

shimmy on the light kit! which one'dya get?

I got the Curtek 9 lamp kit for it and some extra lenses.

The secondary gear on mt EVO50 might have worked but the machining in the center of the hub is wrong. Heliproz shows them in stock (0402591 Main Gear 77T SE) so Wednesday is the quickest I can get it here.

Upon disassembly I noticed that the starter bearing block did have the holes slightly slotted for removing this backlash. I blew it!

Could have been worse. I could have had all the mixes backwards and drove it into the dirt! Life is good.

Great Job....

Sorry to hear that you lost the gear, BUT with no damage.... priceless!!!
Great to hear that it is all going so well for you with it though....
I checked your gallery and what a piece of workmanship!!! Gotta Love It!!!
Waiting to see the vid of the test too......
Very nice job on the build..... use the down time to add those finishing touches to the fuse.... don't rush it now.... you are way ahead of the game... it has been in the air and back!!!
I just spent a full day on making to louvers for the front of my Jet Ranger... now it is off to build the landing light inside the nose..... lot of time, but that is what will make it stand out from all the others.....
Of course yours will stand out just with the 2 heads!!!!
Thanks for keeping us "hopeful's" updated on your progress.....

Happy New Year.... Stan

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!

it has been in the air and back!!!

Yes that was a very GOOD thing. I was a bit Wonky about the first flight. I was shaking just trying to get it to lift off because it wanted to roll foreword before lifting off with the canted head angles. Then once I realized that I needed to adopt a new lift off procedure I was ok. But then I was nervous that it was trying to flip backwards on me. Fortunately once the front end was about 2-3" off the ground the tail lifted off and it hovered just as it was supposed to.

I'm working on the fuselage at the moment. I've opened up the lighting kit and trying to figure out where I need which colored lights. The Curtek lighting system is pretty nice I just need to find a home for it.

Thank you all for your thoughts and well wishes. I'm glad to hear that this project has been helpful. I know that personally I have been encouraged by reading posts by others that have gone through the scale heli route.

I'm hoping my videogropher gets his butt moving on sending me the file (hint)...

OOPPPS kinda forgot about the pics.... sorry BUT good news I just got all the data recovered off my ye ol' confuser and should have some (hopefully I gotta weed through all the crap on the 3 cd roms to find em) pretty quick, just so you can figure out you color placement here's a easy way to remember it

red is never right...
SO right is left, green is right, white is on the tail, antismacks (strobes/blinkers) on top and bottom and if you wanna start talking bout your bird in milspec speak (for scale purposes ) port is left (there is four letters in port and four letters in left so they match) starboard is right (the oddball)

pm me your email addy so I can send ya the pics when I find em may be a day or two with the holiday (and lemme know what the best way to send em is, last I remember there were quite a few photos...)

That's what I was looking for. What color and where. I've scoured the internet and looked a hundreds of photos but I can't see where on the fuse they all are.

Also, I don't just want to stick LED's ot of the nose for the landing lights. Any recomendations fo scale reflector shield construction?

I'll dig up those pics, there were some SUPER detailed pics of rivet patterns and the way (and where) the nav lights were mounted, I just looked for the link for the landing/hover lights, I cant find what you need BUT what I have looks like a mini mag light reflector I'll take a pic of it as well so you can see it.... its quite simple, If I find the link (I just saw the blasted things a few days ago) I'll post it... if I cant find it buy a couple of no name mini mags and rob the guts (I THINK you can just buy replacement parts for the mag lights so you may be able to just buy the bezels) then I was going to angle them in (counter sink so to speak) and cover the hole in the fuse with some clear plastic lexan sheeting left over from a parma R/C car body trimmings (clear soda bottles will work also)

Here's the video of my short but sweet First Flight

Take notice of the wind evident in both the microphone on the camcorder and the horizontal smoke trail. You'll also see that it tried to attack me at one point before the gear let loose!
