e-Electric Conversions > Anyone convert a GMP Cricket?

I've inherited such a beast, NIB and YES I am going to fly it. I hate for it to sit any longer and collect more dust/rot away.

I wonder if anyone's done a conversion, either lately or some time ago, brushed or brushless, and was it/were they successful?

The OS .28 that was in it put out somewhere around 1hp or just under, if I remember correctly. I'd assume an inrunner would be easier, though the outrunners- like the LRK's are really putting out the power I I'll probably need. I suspect that batts and runtime are going to limit me severely if I need 750-1000w to fly.

For some reason(I think the age of the model) I would almost prefer brushed... even if I have to replace brushes every 5 flights. Is that sick or what? I doubt very seriously I'll go with nicads or nimhs though.

Any input welcome, thank you!

don't take this the wrong way... but why bother?? first of all if you have never flown just forget it, this is going to be a much more delicate, harder to fly heli than anything out there. no parts support, etc. if this is for the nostogia, fine, it could be done, but by the time you have finished the conversion you will have much more money into it than say... a nice little trex, or maybe even a cheap ready to fly like the blade CP. I'm not trying to slam you here, I just think you should consider what you expect out of it (flight performance, durability, parts support) and how much you would have to put into the conversion ($$$) vs. other product on the market that will be supportable, fly better and cost much less

flippin and dippin, flying tail to the ground, I fly my heli's like a rabid greyhound!!!

I'm really looking for the 'good lord what made you do THAT' factor. I've got some micro-heli experience, but really I just want to see this massive thing get off the ground, out of GE and MAYBE some FFF. I haven't got any big expectations.

I'm not looking for a modern heli, the main draw with this one is that it made me slobber at the window when I was a kid at the hobby shop.

Looking now at a Hacker C50-15L, found some boat motor mounts that appear they may allow me to mount it w/o massive mods to the chassis. I very likely will pursue a different drive for the tail than the creepy angled music wire(possibly a tail motor if I can lighten it up a bit).

aaronredbaron: I didn't take your post the wrong way, don't worry... I'm not looking for practical, I've been collecting my childhood 'I WANT THAT' toys lately and beating them into submission with better radio gear/brushless/etc...

Hopefully I'm not the first/last person to try to convert it?

I have to agree. I had one. It sucked with an O.S. 28 and it'll suck with an electric motor!

I have one converted to electric, but had to make all lighter parts for it. I love this heli for nostlagic reasons and have 2 from the time. This helicopter required a lot of patience to get it to run but once you got it tuned right it flew great. It was heavy for the time. But new techno can revive this heli to something worhtwhile, if you are the nostalgic type like me and have a little time to tinker with.

If there is any interest I have some parts I did and could make them availble for sale.
