Hi everyone, just wondering, could the antena tube be routed, in the tailboom supports without glitches, here is a picture of my arrengement:

i had read, I beleive in Ray's Authoratative Helicopter Manual that it's not a good idea to run the antenna close to or parallel to the tail boom or boom supports. People have claimed that the proximity of the antenna to the metal tube/boom can weaken the signal or cause glitches.

It's not a consistent problem. Some people switch to a base loaded antenna and have no further problems. Some who have used the base loaded antennas have had nothing but problems.

Running it by the tube likely won't cause any trouble, but if you do start experienceing glitching and you've checked everything else, try routing the antenna away from the supports.

I run my pcm antenna this way, but with ppm i try to stay away from any metal or electronics if I can, so I run the antenna straight out and let it hang. I've tried the whip antenna but had problems, loss of range so now I stick with the long antenna.

I've run the antenna the same way since day one and have not had any issues.

I've been meaning to do this to my Tiger.
Here is a picture of the antenna on my Shuttle.

Hey this is neat! Did you do a range check to make sure range wasn't affected? You're a smart fellow so I bet you did. Now why didn't I think of this? Some people are too smart!

The rim-job uh I mean jim-rig looks the neatest by far with respect to keeping the full length antenna. I'm not an antenna expert. I looked for a long time at other's methods and found the most used were the short loaded and the long, hung straight back with as little bending as necessary.

I thought the reason there are antenna mounting eyes built in both sides under the landing gear was to give a choice of sides to use. I "think"... this is the scary part cause you never know what reaction you get from the janitor, that when you curve the antenna in a short area it is not as effective as remaining straight. I know for a fact that winding the wire around one skid is the worst but I have seen it done before.

After careful consideration I decided to hang mine from the boom. I hooked the end to the tail control rod guide. The wire is inside an antenna tube and I slid a piece of heavy wall clear heat shrink tube over the end of the antenna tube. It was a tight fit. I then put the shrink tube through the last hole in the guide, folded it in half and tie-wrapped it.

Tip:
The antenna tube was not long enough. I used the heat shrink tubing to splice another piece on AND to add the flexible final length on the very end that I could fold and tie-wrap. I did not have to heat shrink the tubing as it was a very firm fit. You may have to use a type of heat shrink that is not clear and may not fit as tight. In that case, hit it with the heat gun.

The method I used serves three solutions... keeps the antenna full length, keeps it from flopping around dangerously and keeps it pretty much away from the heli parts to mitigate interference.

I range checked it and it checks out well. Also had the heli up so high it was a mere speck in the sky without any issues.

You do need to get the antenna tube. It's made by Dubro. I believe it is 1/8" OD. You might have to drill the holes out on the gear legs to get the tubes to fit. I then cut small lengths of fuel tubing and put them on each side of the hole to hold everything in place and also to make it easy to remove if need be.

Now all I have to do is get the old Enya .35 running as well as the antenna!
