Can anyone tell me what are the ideal needle setttings for the Lotterle Carb using 0% Nitro fuel.
I am having trouble in even getting the heli to lift off as the engine usuall cuts before it leaves the ground.
I am using everything Jan Henseleit suggests, including a Enya No 4
Thanks

Good Luck !!!

The Lottle carb is the worst carb I have ever had!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to run the new Webra engine or buy the OS Carb for mine. I might suggest burning some 5% nitro till you get the needle close. Becareful leaning it out or the the exhaust coupler will melt.

Hi,

if you use between 12-15% oil and no nitro, you have to use the standart mixture needle which has no number! As initial needle setting I would start with a plan mixture needle and a main needle which is 3 to 3.5 turns open as Henseleit suggests. Then it should work! Maybe you do not have the standard mixture needle? Check this if you have no success!

@ Peter
in origional the OS 91 FX motor want not to play with the loeterle carb you must put some shims under the head and may be test some needels than it works,or you buy an webra this works well from beginning, but Jan do not like this motor so much because the power is to much he think. Not my way I think it is ok, this motor you can start and handle more easy as the Os and you did not need an extra carb.
He he my first NT I gave away complete because I hate this FX motor, and I do not know to this time that webra want to build also an 91 in counterclock rotation, for the clockwise rotation NT.
@squirrel
the carb is ok but not very easy to handle because you need the right one needle for a good set up,I test one 12mm in my 91 AAR with 12,5% cool power is the 2,3 needle well running and for 0% nitro the 2,0. The full throtle needle is easy, normaly from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2.The other needle I hover with half carb open, there I have a look at the smoke that it is rich an constant, set it and than I have a look by flying.I like it a little more fat in the middle.

Lotterle Carb WHY?

If everyone is saying this carb on the Henseleit3DNT is no good. Then why did Jan Henseleit use it.
I still have not had any success in setting the OS 91 up using the Lottele carb with zero % nitro.
Thanks for the replys so far, but more help would be appreciated as this engine is brand new and seems a shame to just buy a new Webra.
Thanks

I have 3 91 FX with Löetterle carb, they are all running fine with no problems. The 91 AAR is also fine with a 12mm Loetterle. With the standard Ultramix there is less power! If You want to use it in the NT you should change the gear ratio, for lower headspeeds.

The new rev. Webra is available from cyberheli. Stephen is selling the Webra/3Dnt combo. www.cyberheli.com

Peter,
I have the Lötterle on my FX and I really like it.
At first, the engine wouldn't want to run well, cutting out when I wanted to lift off - similar to your problem.
15% Nitro and a very cold plug got me off the ground but I wanted to fly with 5% or less.
->3 head shims was the solution (1 standard + 2 additional). The engine had too much compression and was combusting too early.

I recently switched to 0% Nitro and the engine didn't have enough power.
->1 head shim was the solution and it's running as smooth as ever and has more power than with 5% and 3 shims. Plus, the needle I had for the Lötterle (standard), is specifically designed for 0% Nitro and very thin oil (I use Klotz Heliglow here in the US). Since you are in the UK, you should try and get fuel with Carbolin oil in it. That seems to be very good.

My needle settings:
5% CoolPower (18% Oil) High: 3.5-4 Low: 3.5-4
0% Klotz: High (12% Oil): 3 (still running a bit rich, could be lower) Low: 2.5-3

Happy Flying.

Can you say 0% nitro?

I've been flying my 3D NT for a little over a month with an OS 91/ Lotterle carb on 5% nitro. It had good power on 5% but it was always doggy in the transition from idle to fly and it would hang on the pipe during approaches.

Today my local hobby shop here in Hawaii finally received the long lost shipment of synthetic oil that I needed to mix my own fuel. I mixed the oil in at the prescribed 12% and it flies great! No more doggy transitions, no more hanging on the pipe, it flies with about the same power as the 5% nitro but most noticeable is how much smoother the machine runs.

I've been reading all of the posts regarding the 3D NT and the problems associated with tuning this helicopter with the OS 91 / Lotterle carb / tuned pipe set up and I think that we have to give credit where it is due. Jan Henseleit is "Da Man"! I lived in Germany for three years and nobody except myself was running nitro. All the Germans used tuned pipes and a few of the guys were flying the original 3D on 60 engines and they all went like a bat out of hell. Using any nitro with a true tuned pipe and especially with the Lotterle carb is just a bad combination and this was incredibly obvious to me today. Once I had the 0% nitro on 12% oil, the engine seemed to be very well behaved, easy to tune and easy to read.

Give Jan Henseleit some credit. This guy has broken the mold and created a completely new design from every aspect (drive train, rotor head, engine set up, canopy shape, landing gear, mechanics) and best of all he ultra simplified every thing about a helicopter. This is the simplest heli I've ever built and it flies like it's on rails. I've also learned that I don't need a governor and I've really enjoyed programming pitch curves again. I'm using more of the functions in my radio like cyclic to throttle mixing and why shouldn't I, I paid for it. Now I don't worry about a governor sensor going bad in flight. Simplicity is the name of the new game. This is a great machine fellas, don't think it isn't.

As for my set up and equipment: OS 91 CCW / Lotterle carb / Hatori tuned pipe / Enya #4 plug / Cool power synthetic oil mixed with methynol at 12%. High needle is @ 2 1/4 Low needle is @ 4. I'm pulling 10 degrees of pitch with no droop and my coupler has never melted. I'm running the engine as it came out of the box so I don't even know if it has shims or not. That's all for now.

Great!!!!!!!!! I never complained about the design of the Heli, just the performance of the carb/engine. I will try to get some oil from Morgan.

Fred,

You probably know this but just in case you forgot go to the Mach-7 "Division" of Morgan. They sell the components directly to the end user. That way you don't have to wait on an LHS to get it for you.
