Audacity Models Pantera 50 - Tiger 50 > Tail Hub/Grips Adaptations?

My Tiger has the JR Vigor CS tail hub and grips and I'm finding that fitting run-of-the-mill tail blades is becoming a dilemma.

So far the only blades that will fit and clear the lock-nut on the end of the hub are NHP's (apparently V-Blades will also fit). I have tried Century's standard plastic 85mm blades and RotorTech/Fun-key 95 CF blades and the end of the roots interfere with the lock nut.

So I'm trying to decide if I'm going to change out the whole hub/grip setup to something that places the blade root bolt farther out so I can fit less expensive blades...or...change to the more expensive V-Blades.

Will the stock blade grips hold these RotorTech blades? I'd like to try and retain a dual or triple BB grip to handle the 95mm blades I like to run, will any other manufacture setup work (Hirobo, Century, etc.)?

It's always something and this lil dilemma is keeping me out of the air since my NHP blades have cracked and the trailing edge is separating at the tips

ok, after further digging I found that the Century Falcon, Raven and Predator 60 all use the same TR hub/grip assembly.

On page 15, step 76 in the Predator 60 manual it shows a pair of Rotortech CF tail blades bolted together with the roots ground down with the accompanying text, "The carbon tail blades will not fit the tail rotor grips without trimming the ends. Attach the two blades together and grind 3-4mm off the end of the blades as shown."

Ok, so now I know even Century's grips have a clearance problem with these blades. Though a different machine, I did fit SAB tr blades without a problem.

So, while I think 3-4mm is excessive, I prolly only need 1-2mm max, if I do shave that off of the roots, how will this effect the balance of the blades or will it be inconsequential?

I was just going to mention why not just do a little customizing as long as it's not much. Make sure you do it evenly the two end up the same weight.

I know I'm gonna get flak for this but I had to modify the stock Tiger50 blades so I could fold them properly. There is that raised countersunk boss that hits the grips. I took a razor to them and countersunk deeper so the flat head screw went flush. Mean time I ordered Aerotech replacement 600mm mains... they are better quality AND cheaper.

I don't know if this helps but I have been running NHP 85mm tail blades on the stock blade grips without any problems.

I checked the CG and balance of the RotorTech tail blades before I dremelled them down and they were spot on.

I dremelled them down evenly with the roots bolted together. I popped them into the grips and they fit and can swing enough to avoid much damage on a impact.

I haven't rechecked the weight yet.

I know what you're talking about to do with the stock Tiger wood blades.

I wound up changing to Aerotek 600mm woodies and they fold fine, are cheaper and work just as well. For when I'm farther along in my flying I picked up a nice set of V-Blades 620's and had their roots ground down and rebalanced by V-Blades/Vic.

Jim,

I had NHP 95s on the tail and they fit with no problem since the root ends are very close to the root hole. Unfortunately, they've been damaged.

I've got the Vigor tail on a Raptor, and I had to trim down the root ends of the tail blades, too. I bolted then together, and introduced them to Mr. Beltsander.
After than, I finished them off with some #400 and made sure they still weighed the same.

I just checked the weight, 5 grams each or 0.2oz. each. All good

I meant Aerotech in my previous post. I edited it.

Dan

I'm currently running RotorTech 92mm on both our Tiger 50's, I've also used MS 95mm, RotorTech 95mm. with no problems with the clearance.

I'm also running a Predator tail hub with Predator tail grips on one of our Tigers and again no problems with any of the blades fitting.

Clyde,

I'm glad to know the Predator hub/grips will work on the Tiger. They have two less parts then the Vigor CS setup since the Vigor grips split into halves.

I'm not sure what's different about your's, but in the Predator manual it does instruct to cut off 3-4mm of the RotorTech blade root to achieve clearance. Maybe they've changed the grip design?

Do you have pics?

Either way, the only way I was getting these to fit was by sanding the roots

If I didn't do that, I'd have to wait and find a set of NHPs, which I really don't like anymore. As it is, I've been limited in how much I fly I'm hoping to maybe get it out some time this week if the weather holds.

Box stock Predator tail bolted right on and I just bolted up the RotorTech 92mm blades, no sanding and I just grabbed the blade and spun it completely around in both directions.

Clyde,

When and if you get a chance, can you measure the Predator hub end-to-end, and the lock-nut to the center of the grip bolt?

My Vigor CS hub from the end of one lock-nut to the other is 57.48mm and from the lock-nut to grip bolt center is 11mm.

My RotorTech blades look like this:

They have a clear sticker on them that says "RotorTech Century / Fun-Key" in prismatic colors. You can see that the root extends quite a bit from the bolt hole.

Same blades, I ordered the 92mm for the 46-50 size heli not for the 60 size, they have two different part numbers for the 92mm blades and I'm sure the bolt pattern is further inlet on the 60 size models.

I'll measure the blades on Friday.

I have the H 0956C, 60-91 size, 95mm Long x 30mm Wide ... if the root design is different between the 30-50 and 60-91 blades, that would explain why I had to sand them down.

hmm, I got big mofo tail blades

When choosing aftermarket or other brand tail assemblies, what do we look for as far as what will work?

I know we have a 5mm output shaft. The other variables?

I guess if you get the whole assy including the pitch slider it will work as long as it fits a 5mm shaft?
