Audacity Models Pantera 50 - Tiger 50 > JR Gearing and Headspeed?

In MHT's latest article on the Tiger they suggest installing JR's 88t main and 10t pinion gears to "allow the Hyper 50 to do it's best."

The stock ratio is 8.9 and at 17k rpm where the Hyper is spec'ed to make it's peak power, you'd wind up with a calculated optimal headpseed of 1910rpm .. correct?

If you goto the 88t and 10 gears, you goto a 8.9:1 ratio? At 17k, this works out to about 1932rpm head speed?

They go one further by possibly trying the 11t Vigor main gear, with the 88t main would yield a 8:1 ratio or 2125rpm head speed?

I'm presuming that by bumping up the ratio, which will effectively bump up the headspeed at any given engine rpm this will make the response more crisp? . or something?

JR part numbers: JRP 960002 - 88t main gear ($8.46), JRP 960321 10t pinion ($21.21)

Yes, things would definitely get more crisp at a higher head speed, though I don't know that "I" would want to be standing near that puppy at 2100+ RPM because I saw what happened at IRCHA when a Raptor head let go at some un-Godly high head speed - it wasn't pretty! What is it you're trying to do that the heli doesn't satisfy at 1910 RPM on the head? For a faster roll rate you could substitute for the existing flybar control arms with some which you could tilt down (like those on Minature Aircraft XCell helis) and hence, gain clearance bewteen them and the bottom of the main blade grip. This would permit greater pitch of the paddles and thus promote greater agility - it's why they do it on the MA birds. Also you could grind a little in the aluminum head block to permit greater tilt of the flybar, but you're really taking things to an extreme when you do that.

But if you watch the video of Marcus Kim flying his Tiger 50, that was a stock assembly with merely the addition of the PDR0069 3D Swashball kit and the PDR0071 3D Urethane Dampers . . . ditto for the footage of Pete Campbell and Beresford Davis. One thing which plays a huge roll in fine tuning the model to suit you are the blade and paddle selection. What are you using? I've come to really like the blades and paddles offered by Vic Campbell of V-Blades personally. While the blades are pricey, they seem to be quite a bit more durable than any other blade out there - and they sure fly nice.

My 2¢
