Put the Tiger 50 in the air for the first time Sunday.
Just flew around, no aerobatics.
I am not an accomplished heli pilot by any means and the only other heli I have to compare it to is a Cal 30.
There is no comparison !!
Smooth, stable, and predictable.
I have much more confidence with the Tiger 50.

The Tiger is sweet, I am happy I bought it. This weekend I will try my first loops and stuff I can do on the sim.

I put new carbon blades on my Tiger the other day, and the sucker flys amazing. I had woodies, and feel they are good for a fire only now. What a difference it made, its super smooth.

Smooth and Stable.......

I have said this right from the first time that I lifted mine off the ground....it is amazing how smooth and stable this unit can be, yet still blow right into just about any manuever that you want to do... and that is out of the box.... even with the upgrades on it, the smoothness does not go away, and that it where the confidence to try new things with this heli comes from...
Then you throw in OUTSTANDING customer support, and you have a combination that is going to be hard to beat as this name gains momentum..... Glad to be part of the "Team"!!!!!
And it is still the only heli that I know of that has a Tiger Grin in evey box.... NUFF SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Weather!!!!!

Well, the season is trying to shut us down up here in the Great North East!!!!!! It was 25 degrees this morning, but it is going to 50 later today and then to 60 tommorow..... It looks as if we will get the chance to burn a little more fuel in these Tigers before putting them up for the Winter..(spelled "SUCKS") but the indoor stuff is still fun too......
An hey, Vt Fly Girl..... the BB is all set.......

Good day today!

No crash!

But.. no fly.

I didn't get out to the field until a bit later in the day. It was a little windy. Then there was a guy with a jet powered airplane that asks us to stand diwn while he test flys it. Awesome plane.

Lot's of BS-ing in the mean time. Finally I get mine ready. Starts up... shuts off. Then as I try to start it a second time the starter seemed to be acting funny. Long story short, the hub nut came loose. Wasn't spinning the engine. It was too late to do anything at the field besides I wouldn't have been able to indicate the hub in tolerance on the field.

I also did the "Positive Delta Modification" this morning before taking it out. This mod is described in Addendum 10.6. Basically flipping all the head parts 180 degrees so the main rotors are controlled from the leading edge. I did it more as a learning excercise for me, getting used to taking the head apart and reassembling it. While I was at it i installed the newer two point seesaw. Seems to have come out decent except I didn't get a chance to fly today. Gotta watch cause now the blade bolt ends now protrude upwards. Be careful laying your hand on the head to slow it down as so many do. I may put her up in the back yard tommorrow.

Anyway, back to the loose clutch drive hub. I purchased this heli used but never flown. The fellow had the Hyper already installed. Everything looked straight and true. He did use the PDR0090 equalizing nut with the longer option hub so it didn't require the prop washer.. That nut is a locking typ nut. He must not have had it tight enough. Fortunately I purchased a crank locking tool a while back and I'll have to dig out my machinist tools to dial it in.

I like the way this bird is put together. Overall it's pretty easy to work on.

Hootowl,

about those blade bolts sticking up, you can mark where they protrude out of the lock-nut, remove the bolt and then cut off the excess thread with a dremel cut-off wheel, then lightly file or sand the edges so there's nothing sharp, reinstall... now the ends of the bolts will be flush with the lock-nuts.

reguarding your doing the positive-delta mod, did you cut-down the wash-out base? If you didn't, you likely won't have much more then +6* of positive pitch available. I had to trim about a 1/8" off the bottom to get 10*, though I think my linkage lengths might be all off since when I originally did the mod, I had over 15* on the top end.... I've crashed since then and screwed with my linkage lengths =\

Dan,

Yes I did cut down the washout base. I ground it down with a bench grinder and a bowl of water. Grinding on one of these, depending on the dia wheel, gives you a radius. When you get close you flatten it by grinding in the side of the wheel. Worked out great. I'm a machinist by trade so doing this is second nature. Other more inexperienced should be careful if you try it this way. Watch your fingers.

I haven't flown since. Probably tonight. The hub is not fun getting concentric. It would be nice if the bore fit the engine shaft as a slip fit. Also I have the longer hub for my Hyper. There is very very little land inside the bottom of the bore of the hub. I can see the aluminum crushing because of the small contact area. I would prefer some kind of clamping like the starter shafts have. I'm concerned that even if the nut never loosens, the small contact area will allow it to loosen after a while.

Is anyone having any loosening problems with the long hub?

hootowl,

I cut down my washout base on a friend's Bridgeport mill. We took it slow so as to not heat the part too much and afterwards we had to slightly clamp it back in the vise to return the inside bushing to a round shape since it had been just slightly ovaled by holding it in the vise on the mill table.

Dan the bench grinder worked great. I did it yesterday morning in a cold garage in my robe.... not a pretty site LOL. Took about five minutes. I was real careful not to heat it up.

A better way would be a tighter fit on the engine shaft so you can crank down hard on the nut without material mushrooming into the gap between the shaft and the hub.

Or go back to a short hub and use the prop washer?

This is probably, as I have read in the reviews and experienced myself, one of the negatives of this heli.

What happens if it loosens in flight?

if it loosens in flight, you essentially loose clutch engagement, full or partial... so you'll be down on power, have to recover and/or auto it in...

I have the short hub/prop washer, so I don't know if I'll have the same problem. I haven't check the nut since after I tightend it down. I didn't use lock-tight on it at the recommendation of David Harkley who posted a lot of information about dialing in the hub/clutch for Miniature Aircraft machines on the "freak forum".

I tightened it down real good with a 3/8" drive wrachet. Run-out was about one-quarter of a thousandth of an inch.. not bad
