Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Engine Lift calculations??

Location:

I am trying to build a chopper for photo work, one that goes up, takes photos and comes down. Not much flying around.

Slow speed and stability are most important. I need to calculate the following: The size of the gas engine and props needed to lift a 15 pound helicopter body ... and also 13 pounds of "camera and mounting" (attached under the body). Please help if you can.

Where can I get the engine and props needed??
Thanks.

?? 13lbs of photo equipment??? what in the hell are you lifting? my VCR doesn't weight 13 pounds. you will defiantly need a gasser , find one that will swing the biggest blades.

If you're doing photography, you want a gasoline-burning motor, not a methanol burner like 99% of the RC helis out there right now. The nitro+methanol+oil exhaust trail is pretty dense and will cloud your images. It's also pretty 'wet' and it will coat the lense from time to time.

When it comes to gas engines, 99% of those are Zenoah G23s. You can get them upgraded for more power by a couple of different shops, Hanson and Blois are the most popular. Unfortunately I don't have contact information for either company, but a web search should turn up the info you need.

13 pounds sounds like a lot... If you can halve the weight of your camera package, this helicopter might be a good pick:

As far as I know, it's the only commercially available heli with a pan/tilt setup built in. There are larger helis (with larger motors and larger carrying capacity) but you'll have to come up with a way to mount your camera.

From the nature of your question it sounds like you're very new to RC helicopters. Don't take take this the wrong way, but you have a big learning curve ahead of you. Feel free to contact me directly at nate(at)natew.com. I have been into RC helis for a few years and have done little bit of aerial video stuff just for fun. I'd be happy to help you get started in the right direction.
