| They're primarily used for flight instruction. Two similar controllers would be hooked up with a special cable (often referred as a "trainer cord" or "buddy cable"). With planes, the instructor will usually get the aircraft off of the ground and then give control over to the student by holding the switch. If something bad happens where the instructor needs to reclaim control he lets go of the switch and then has full control again.
The problem with buddy cables for heli's is that since they usually are low flying there is not enough time for another individual to recover when something goes horribly awry.
The port on the transmitter for a training cable is also often used for a PC hookup (with a different special cable) so that the TX can be used for flight sims.
If you're interested, there was a prior message thread on buddy cables for the Blade transmitter you might want to check out here on RR.
