Speed - Performance - Drag Race > how to tune Curtis Muscle Pipe for drags ?

hi,

been around drag racing some,,, but this is my first go at getting serious on setting up a tuned pipe... any help would really be great..

my target setup for drag racing only...
i have os50 with 40e carb,
i have a 50 or 60 size (2) piece muscle pipe (the flange parts fits engine ok) (this 2 piece pipe is probably 2 or 3 years old)
raptor v2
probably will be 600 blades
probably will be 30 size gearing
target head speed 2100

so for a novice pipe tuner - "me" what would be best way to get this in ball park...

should i test bench motor with a prop and tune the pipe ?
(what size prop to start with)

or
try to do it in flight test with heli ?

before i get to far into this,,, is there a better pipe for drag racing this engine ??

thanks for help,,,

Hi Joe,

It is really tough to get good information using a prop on the bench, I have tried it.

Just to get a ballpark length on the pipe, are you running a stock engine with stock port timing?

At 9.56:1 ratio for 2100rpm, you will be turning close to 20K on the engine.
And you are going to use a ringed piston with stock timing sleeve! It is not going to happen.

Forget the bench test with a prop, it is not representative of how the engine runs on the heli.

1. Make sure that your engine configuration matches the application.
2. The tune pipe will not work properly at the target RPM unless the exhaust and intake timing match the pipe pulse.
3. Cooling a high RPM in a heli while staging or in between heats is a tough task.

If you want to run the engine stock, you should reconsider the target RPM and gearing. 17K to 18k will suit the stock engine better. Find out what is the recomended header length the displacement and RPM you wish to turn. Head clearance may have to be adjusted for optimal results.

measured stock exhaust timing =145 ??

thanks for all the post,,

i got the "advanced r/c boat" book as suggested,,

measured the exhaust timing on my stock os50 looks like 145

the book talks about do not run tuned pipe if timing is less than 168 to 176

did i measure this right ?? 145 seems really low based on the book..

also based on post and the 145 sounds like the gearing and RPM range i originally thought would have engine running way to high RPM

so would i see any benifit with tuned pipe if i get engine rpm closer to 18k ???

i think i could easily open exhaust port timing to 155 but more than that i would have to grind both on the sleeve and the case around the exhaust port. has anyone done those sort of things on OS50 ??

thanks again for reply !!

Time To Climb

I believe that Bruce Bennett has the current record for "Time to Climb".

Bruce built a couple of motors for me when I was running 60 class Drags. I don't know if he is still into it, but he does know what he is doing.

Another good motor guy is Brett Moorer at Allied Hobbies.

Brett built the motor I used to beat Ron Lund in 2001 at the IRCHA drags.

Both guys are pretty good.
