e-E-Flite Blade CP mCX CX 400-3D > What is the best LiPo setup for Blade duration?

Right now my Blade is totally stock. I think I am getting up the nerve to upgrade to LiPo's. I would like the longest duration flights possible with some possible forward flight in the next couple of weeks and aerobatics in the way distant future.

Should I go with the 8 or 9 tooth pinion?

What mAh battery?

Flat bottom blades or symmetricals?'

Should I just get the aero kit?

What flight times are you getting from your Blade and what is your setup?

Any advice appreciated!

Definitely purchase the aerobatic upgrade kit, which includes the symmetrical blades and a motor with the 9 tooth pinion.

I use a 3 cell ThunderPower 1320mah battery..I usually get between12-15 minutes of hovering & FFF before the power starts to drop off. The setup is stock except I have the flybar weights moved completely inward towards the paddle control frame. I also did the sticky collective fix as well..everything else is stock.

If you decide to go Lipo then spend the extra $$ and buy a good quality name brand pack..never had a problem with my TP pack and the piece of mind is well worth it. A good quality charger is a must also.

Good luck!

18 min.. on E-tec 1250..

Hi, i have 8 tooth pinion, flat blades, and 3 cell e-tec 1250 batt, fly about 18 to 20 (foward fly/hover) minutes, but after 10 to 12 min i land to cool down motors and 4-1.

I'm charging batteries....

Jason from e-flite is reporting that with a TP 1320, flat bottom blades, and the 8 tooth pinion I can expect flight times of 35-40 minutes!

Can anyone confirm this? That would be awesome! I wonder if the motor with heatsink and 4 in 1 can handle a 40 minute flight?

Wow! I havent heard of flight times that long before..

I guess alot of it would have to do with what kind of flying you're doing. For that long I would assume it would have to be mostly hovering with only some gentle FF. I would think you would start compromising the integrity of the motors and shorten their useable lifespan.

After the 12-15 minute flights I make the tail motor is slightly warm but the main motor is hot to the touch...2-3 seconds and I cant hold my finger on it (both have heatsinks). Maybe running without the canopy would make some difference.

If you go with that setup let us know how it works out for you.

I really wouldnt expect to get 30-40 min on that battery.Hovering eats up more of your power than forward flight.10-15 max expected with a full charge and everything is working correctly. using a 1320 ma
I would recemend letting the motor cool down after 10 min just to lengthen engine life.As soon as I feel the need for more throttle needed
(more then usual)that is a good sign to land it and let it cool down and add a fresh battery.
Mine is stock also , sticky collective adj made.Flybar weights moved inward.

There seems to be a lot of speculation regarding the tested and confirmed set ups we recommend. I can assure you we have spent many countless hours testing the Blade CP set ups we recommend. There is no problem with running the motor continuously for 10, 15, 25 or even 40 minutes using the set ups we recommend - I have done it for well over 100 hundred flights on some Blade CPs and still have yet to burn out a single main or tail motor. The motors do not get hotter and hotter the longer you fly - they will typically reach a peak temperature at which they will remain for the duration of the flight. When set ups are properly configured, utlizing the optimum power band for a given motor, brush wear is the only thing that you have to worry about in regard to motor life (temperature related motor failures are only an issue if using set ups we do not recommend or stalling the motors in crashes). You may be suprised how long the brushes last when a motor is operating in a proper performance range.

The stock Blade CP set up is extremely efficient - it is possible to fly for upwards of 10-12 minutes on a single charge with the stock NiMH packs when using a peak detection charger.

Using the Aerobatic Enhancement Kit and a 3S 1320mAh Thunder Power pack, flight duration is upwards of 25+ minutes with ease (not all 1200-1320mAh packs are created equal - some deliver less performance and duration. As many say - Buy cheap here and buy twice). This is with a 9T pinion and symmetrical main blades.

Using an 8T pinion with flat bottom main blades will deliver durations of 35+ minutes. Think combined efficiency of the stock set up and the AEK set up.
