I just thought I would throw my $.02 in regarding this mod.

In a nut shell it's awesome.....

The control and response time is sooooo much better than the stock setup I can't believe I waited so long to do it.

My setup is a little different in that I didn't get the combo tail fin & motor mount. I went the separate route. I like the idea of having the fin farther up the boom. Just a personal preference though.

I have to give a big time thanks to Stealth for pointing some things out that I missed and to every1 else who has contributed to the various posts we've had here. It's been great reading and very educational.

Talk to Every1 later,

Scott

Could you explain which tail mod you did and the part #s needed to do it? Photos would be great.

Thanks

I'll chime in on that request too. I took Stealth's parts list and went to balsparp.com as he recommended, but I can't find the parts on their website. This is confusing! I also didn't have much luck with the parts list listed with Horizon Hobbies parts. Again, I couldn't find all of them on their website either. I'm not talking "out of stock", I'm talking can't find period. So...yes, some help please.

THE DETAILS

Hey Folks,

Here are the details for how I did my DD tail mod:

Motor P/N: GW/EDP-50/H
Tail Rotor Housing P/N: GW/H001-FD5002-032
Heat Sink P/N: GW/EHS-12
Tail Rotor Blade (4530) w/adapter P/N: FD5002-030B
Tail Fin P/N: See pic

I ordered all the parts from my LHS but you can get them from www.gwsparts.com as well as from horizon.

I also copied Stealth's mod which is to cut the threads off the tail prop adapter which gives the finished product a much better look.

I was lucky in that my boom had broken free again from the main body so all I did was get another stock boom and used that. You'll have to solder additional length to each wire due to the GWS motor being longer. I soldered the wires so that the joints are hidden in the boom. If you go this route make sure you stagger the solder joints otherwise they will not fit inside the boom. Especially when you try and add electrical tape.

The link will take you to my yahoo pics which I have setup a photo book showing the components as well as my helicopter. Oh yea, the reason why the heat sink isn't on the motor is because I forgot to order it when I ordered everything else. It's currently on order and should be here early next week.

Hopefully this will help everybody out.

I got mine all setup again tonight. I have moved my Blade electonics over to an Esky CP2 chassis. I am still running the Blade Hiller only head with Esky grips.

Anyhow, I was able to hover for a few minutes outside under a street lamp. It is kind of gusty out tonight, so a good test for the DD tail. WOW! It locks on big time. I also did not have to make any adjustment to my REVO at all coming from the geared setup.

My balance was no problem using a PolyQuest 1100mah 3s. I have not slapped on the GWS heat sink - but it weighs about another 3.2 grams or so.

I also picked up a 4 x 2.5 GWS prop for testing, which may relieve some strain on the motor.

Now here's where I am still wondering about something: A lot of people who ran this motor setup with 3s lipo on Hummingbirds - doing insane 3D - were using 3x2 or 3x3 GWS props.

GWS even suggests using it on this motor, and it is the only prop they have data for with this motor:
http://www.gws.com.tw/english/produ...ystem/edp50.htm

If may be that the 4.5 x 3 prop is more suitable to 2s lipo or 9.6v NiMh. But I am thinking we may be over prop'ing this motor on 3s lipo if we use the 4.5 x 3 prop, or even the 4 x 2.5 prop. We may be burning these up too...

Anyhow - as soon as daylight breaks out, I will do some more testing.
