Bergen R/C Helicopters > Bergen Intrepid Turbine

Back from an outstanding showing at IRCHA 2005, here is the Bergen R/C Helicopters Intrepid Turbine.

Using the Wren MW 54 Turbine and Wren Gearbox for smooth reliable power, preassembled and test run at Bergen R/C, with cooling fan installed and dialed to less than .002. No belts to break, no load on the turbine shaft itself. It's a free spinning Turbine, with a power turbine wheel spinning the gearbox. At full power of 160,000 RPM, capable of producing 8 HP.

Using G10 for strong and lightweight framework with no worries of possible RF concerns.

The tail gearbox is the same Heavy Duty one from the Industrial Twin, with a 6mm output shaft and heavy duty tail hub.

Fuel tanks are spun Aluminum of 22 oz each, and can be painted, as seen on Greg Alderman's bird, to match your canopy, which is fibreglass and primered, ready to paint.

All up weight on the production model turned out a bit heavier than the prototype, 17 Lbs ready to fly with fuel on board, which ain't bad for a model with an engine capable of pumping out up to 8 HP.

Flight times have averaged around 15 minutes on the total 44 oz of fuel after minor tweaking of the programming in the ECU, which, if you want to know the secret, you'll have to purchase one!! It is capable of more, I'm sneaking up on 20 minutes!

Which brings us to "How much?" Kit price is $6850.00, which does include the following,

810 mm V-Blades, symmetrical
110 mm V-Tail blades
90 or 95 mm V-Paddles, your choice.

You will need to provide,

Radio gear (transmitter, receiver, 3 servos, gyro and tail servo)
Battery packs (recommend Duralite, they have a package just for this bird) and switch (comes with the Duralite package)
UAT Bubble Trap from BVM models (basically a header tank)
Fuel, both Kerosine/Jet A and Propane (Powermax from Coleman)
Turbine oil, Wren's recomendation of oil such as 2380 available at nearest FBO airport.

The Bergen Intrepid Turbine is now available, call us at 269-445-2060.

Sneaking up on 20 minutes! keep tweaking. Exellent post Chris, I sure enjoyed flying them at IRCHA maybe next year we can get a bunch of them in the air at one time.

Most definitely!!

The beauty behind our mechanics setup is just that, you can change from one to another very easily.

For instance, your EB would require,

Lower frames
Collective servo plate
Collective servo pushrods
Elevator servo pushrods
2 rear battery trays and hardware
Pinion gear (10 tooth)
Wren Turbine Engine W/ electronics
Fuel bottles w/ mounts
Fuel tubing
sundry other items (batts, header tank, etc)

The point is, the upper frames, tail system, head system, control system, is identical.

This is definitely something that should be promoted by Bergen. It is actually quite easy to convert from one power plant to another. I'm in the process of rebuilding three Intrepids. Once you get past the lower frames and the engine mounting, they're completely identical.

Maybe some official conversion kits from Bergen are in order. Something along the lines of, "If you already have a 60/90/Gasser order this kit..."

This also means they're great for crash parts. You can swap out the entire head or tail assembly and drop it into another Intrepid if you happen to break something

Good info!

Congratulations on the Turbine Bergen, it looks awesome. I like how "in-line" the powertrain looks, and how beefy the tail appears to be.

Dear Lord, help me resist the temptation for at least another few years, for the prices to come down somewhat

You guy are not helping!

I don't want to lose that bet

I'll owe my friend a crisp $1 bill, and he'll have my acknowledgement that indeed, I couldn't resist. I'll like it better when HE gives me his shinny $1, and admits he was sadly mistaken.

Happy flying, I'll make sure to let you guys know when I see my first turbine heli. Maybe it'll be a Bergen.

Turbine Fuel

is it better to run Jet A-1 or Kero?

The A-1 would burn better I would think?
and stank up real nice!

I don't think you would notice any difference in smell or performance, most run kerosene because it may be "cleaner" fuel, as in less impurities, less to clog up the internals of the turbine.

Bergen Turbine

I run mine on both Jet-A and Low odor K1 Kero. Can't tell any difference except for the smell.

I just passed the 10hr mark on my Turbine Bergen today per the ECU!
