Scale Model RC Helicopters > Funkey Agusta .30 and Hirobo Shuttle- The nightmare continues........

Sorry to come here and vent, maybe I can get some ideas- Here's the problem, and , I've been fighting with this for 2 1/2 weeks now. I'll never build another .30 scaler after this. First of all, muffler to fuselage clearance is very limited. I have bought/tried 5 different mufflers, most "standard" heli types, and my favorite (quiet) Kyosho Caliber muffler won't fit either. Last week I ordered the Century scale muffler. It clears the fuselage, but touches the rear landing gear crossmember. ..And the exhaust outlet also hits the rear gear mount. No problem, I notched it out, spent 3 nights fitting everything. I made my FIRST ever "scale" test hover, and guess what? The Century scale muffler is the LOUDEST most ANNOYING muffler I have ever heard. Mind you, I have 1/4 scale gasser airplanes, and this was worse!!! For $80, and Century's website dares to call it "quiet" I'll be calling them tomorrow. So, back to the drawing board. I have 2" of clearance between the engine exhaust flange and the side of the fuse. Looks like I may need some type of tuned pipe header, then fabricate some type of rear exhaust for this thing. So.......Tried the mechanics in my .30 Jet Ranger fuse...SAME thing...just not wide enough. Sorry for the rant, very frustrated right now. All progress has come to a screeching halt......And to add to the frustration, I bought the fuse and mechanics over a year ago, and have been looking forward to this until now, since my flying skills are finally up to par.

I had the same trouble installing X-cell 30 mechanics in a Funkey Long Ranger. I test flew the crap out of the mechanics while I finished the fuselage....only to find out later that the muffler I had been flying would'nt fit! I tried all the spare mufflers I had laying around and all were either touching the fuselage or within a 1/4". I got lucky and found a combo that worked nice and is only slightly louder than the stock mufflers on my Calibers. Rick's website had a header ( HATHSB3X - X-CELL 30 ) which works for right side exhaust outlets, although I'm not sure which side the Shuttle's exhaust is on? I then used a 30 size tuned pipe from an older Kyosho. I can tell you this worked perfect for me....used an exhaust deflector and routed it out the rear lower portion of the fuselage. Good luck in your quest.

Cop: Sir, have you been drinking? Driver: Why? Is there a fat girl in my backseat?

Thanks. I was thinking along those lines of a header/ pipe. Shuttle exhaust is on the left side. I have a friend who welds- maybe....I can use a header pipe then weld it into a stock round muffler ??? Going to the LHS tomorrow to see what they have.

I do agree with you that Century scale mufflers are not the best thing in the world. But it fits nicely in my Funkey scale Airwolf fuselage. Flying it far away from you will mask the problem.

Hi
I had same problem that you !
Clearance is so small as I did not find something to fit in this fuse
I put the same Century muffler , and dicovered the noise it makes !
It even does not fit as you can see on the photo !
I had to open the fuse and modify the rear mount !
Hope you will find something better !
Let us know
Regards
Andre

Brad, i feel your pain man. i too agree that the scale muffler is a but hard on the ears. i have been flying one in my sheriff jetranger for over a year and right before ircha of this year i found a quieter solution. incidentally, if the muffler is close to the side but not touching, it will be okay if you put some sort of heat shield in between the muffler and the fuse. i simply use carboard and glue it in with high temp sillicone/rtv. works like a charm on even the closest fit. i have quieted some of the loud mufflers by stuffing it with the scouring pads found at your supermarket. i use the steel course stuff and it works great. the scale muffler having such a small opening where the inlet side is will take some time getting it packed in there but it is worth the effort. my shuttle jetranger used the std muffler(the little black one) with no fitting or clearance issues. unfortunately, hirobo supplies a bigger one now with their "plus" which wont fit. the muffler should still be available though since it is still furnished with their lama.
i have a buddy who has a hawk sport fitted in the same fuse and he hasnt mentioned any muffler clearance issues. i forget what mechs you are using. i hope you wont give uo or let this one deter you from doing another scaler, they are so much fun once they ar done

Hi Brad,
I have a Century 109 with hawk mechanics. One thing I will say is that it is a lot better fit than the 30 size Long Ranger. It was such a tight fit I sold it before I got too teed offf and crushed it.
I got the 109 from Emile and I only had to notch the side of the bottom half of the fuselage to clear the scale muffler. It is not noticeable when the top half is on.
I will do the Emile modification to the muffler with steel wool as it is a little loud for my taste too. sometimes you just have to try all kind of muffler combinations until you find the one that works for your application.
Do you have any pics of your setup for us to look at?
Here are two pics of the test flight with my 109 yesterday.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their help and input. I think I have the problem solved. I am not going to deal with the Century scale muffler, it is ridiculously loud, and touches against the main gear causing it to melt, and will have to be replaced. You can see the gear crossmember notched out for the exhaust exit. Anyhow, after some espionage in Emile's gallery, I picked up this pricey Hatori header pipe at the LHS. Today I ordered a " .50 quiet tuned pipe" from Rick's for $48. I'll have it here for the weekend, and retest the setup, with the exhaust exiting somewhere at the bottom of th tail section, I will attach the pipe with a flexible coupling and should be able to bend as needed to center it inside the fuse tail. IF it is too loud, I picked up some Chore Boy coarse copper wool to stuff the pipe.

Cool deal!!! let us know how it works out. yeah, unfortunately the scale muffler is kinda vulgar. it is however very convenient in most scale setups.

So far the Hatori header and Zimmerman quiet pipe is working good. A slight lack of backpressure, so I put some coarse copper wool into the pipe, now it is whisper quiet- very "scale-like" All I have left to do is set up the gyro on the mechanics, then I can do a final test-fit into the fuse before starting paintwork.
