e-E-Flite Blade CP CX 400-3D > Salvage a 4-in-1 Rx - Don't trash it...

A buddy of mine fried out his Blade CP 4-in-1. The Main Motor ESC was not working after a crash.

I took the 4-in-1 apart and found (besides a putrid smelling pair of burnt ICs) that the receiver is seperate from the ESC Mixer/Gyro unit. It is modular, and the Rx board and Gyro/ESC board plug into each other with a connector, which connects channel 3 and 4 from the Rx to the Gyro/ESC. The connector that connects the two boards is a standard pair of servo connectors!

So I tested all 6 channels with a std servo and Rx battery pack. The Rx works fine.

This Rx should be fine for use in park flyers, or maybe other cheapo Helis. Hey, a 6 channel FM Single Conversion Rx is nothing to throw away...

Now I wonder if someone will start selling replacement ESC/Gyro boards - so people can repair their own 4-in-1 units cheaper than buying a whole new one...

And how about a replacement brushless board? Too noisy?

Someone get to work :-)

Sorry if this was posted before.

I'm all for it. My blade was put out of ccommision b/c of a crash that has caused undetrmined damage to the 4-in-1. ALl I get is uncontrollable servo glitching when powered. I refuse to pay the $70 for a new 4-in-1..so I bought a t-rex . I do wish I could get it running cheaply though.

Losing a $70 part DOES stink on this little inexpensive bird. My 4-in-1 started doing the random glithing, full throttle at random times, etc. I just shelved the bird rather than spend so much money. It sat about a month and I started to miss it. I'd just stare at the 4-in-1 hanging on the lonely peg at the hobby store, it was so sad.

One day I was at one of the LHS's and the owner gave me a good deal on a 4-in-1, I think he missed my constant buying of other spare parts.

I do like it for flying in the yard under all the trees; something I'd never do with other helis.

PS - The RX is 11 grams with antenna and crystal - no case. Maybe add 1-2 more grams for shrink wrap and it's good to go.

Here are pics of the 4-in-1 disassembed, plus a re-finished receiver weighing 13 grams with crystal, and having dimensions of 41mm x 22mm x 10mm.

The header pins for channel 3 and 4 stick out another 10mm. If you are handy with a soldering iron and have some through hole PCB experience, you can easily swap this header connector to the other side of the PCB with all of the other connectors. Then the Rx would be more compact, and basically like a typical micro Rx.

I also posted a pic of the PCB - clearly showing it labled - 6CH Receiver.

I also have tried a cut down GWS ESC heat sink on the main motor FETs. It fits nice and snug in the case.

Happy landings!
