Old Kalts & Old Pilots

I lurned on this back in the early 80's. [See My Gallery] .It was supposed to be called a "Baron 50/60 with a Black Head 2". Just wondering if anybody can confirm this. I have not aerobated it, just crused around. The windscreen is now warped and needs a newer one. I have all the manuals and parts list if anybody wants. Regards, Ken

Kencol,

I have a baron 60EX with a Blackhead 2. Bought it new and built it in 1986. Have not flown it for some years but got it out the other day and have been fitting new servos and receiver tonight, its got the original mechanical dual rate gyro, Futaba FP-G152.

It is as well engineered as todays top machines, everything is ball raced and there is zero slop, it cost me £1200.00 in 86. Would be nice to get a few spares.

If it is confirmatiom whether it is a Blackhead 2 or not, send me a pic and I'll tell you.

Hello Fellows: If it's a Blackhead 2, the side frames are horizontal. A Blackhead 1 has vertical side frames. I have two Baron 60EX's with BH1's I am trying to decide whether to sell. Thanks!

All Kalt Flyers

Hello Everyone: Does anybody have the assembly instructions for the Kalt Baron Alpha (UK version) or the Excalibur (US version)? Please contact me if you do and I will fill in the details. For those that don't know, this is a 60 size model that came after the Baron 60 and before the Baron Alpha 2. Thanks!

Peksa....the kalt baron 20 usually has a black main gear, and the kalt 30 mx usually has a white main gear.

Hello Larry: Thanks for the reply. I should have known you'd have it. Larry, I have been trying to assist a flyer in Wales with a manual for the Kalt Alpha (Excalibur). He has one in pieces that he would like to rebuild. Let me contact him to see if he still needs a copy and I will get back to you. In the meantime could you give me an estimate to copy and send it to me. Use my email. Thanks.

That Im not sure about...not sure if it has the same gear ratio or not....the size looks comparable. but thats all I know....any time I have seen a baron 20...the main gear always seems to be black.

Wandering into this......... I have a few questions.

I have just been given a Kalt 50, it was last flown about 18 months ago - no crashes, no FFF, just hovering (I collect it at the end of this month).

This must be the best place to find information on this heli, what is it, what is the stock configuration. How do they fly compared to current helis like a Trex 600, non 3D flight. What flight times can I expect?

What will I need to do with the IC to get it running (I am all electric at present). I intend to change the RX gear to run with my DX7.
Any suggestions on what servos would work well in the Kalt?

TIA

if you're still learning to fly get yourself a trex600 or raptor 50
you can not get spares for kalts anymore (yes we all know midland helicopters list the odd spare but this will not get it back in the air after a crash)
my baron 60 in a scale machine flies very well and with modern servos and gyros it could possible be near to the current models in performance ,but may not 3d as well as a modern machine and who knows how it would stand up to the modern 3d flight patterns?
for your servos choose a quilty unit with good torque and speed the gyro use a quality modern head holding unit as then the risk of damage due to poor radio will be less,
before anyone says anything yes i do know they flew ok with older mechanical gyros and std servos when they were new .

payne1967:
Thanks for the reply - I have a 600E at present, it is used for AP work, I am not really into 3D.

Upgrading the servos on my 600E and transplanting the older ones on to the Kalt could be the way I go on this. I have a CSM 560 that I can press into service. I am also looking at an AR9000 for the Trex, so the AR7000 can also move to the Kalt. I'm sort of recycling my own kit.

I suppose the reason I said yes to the gift was, flying fuel is meant to be different to electric (I am told). Also, why would I turn down a free heli.

I guess that the old radio kit will end up sold, given away or disposed of.
