Has anyone considered putting a ducted tail fan on the blade. If so then what were the results. Can anyone help with the pros & cons of doing this.

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/703010.asp should work with bracket......... also better to use when in grass and carpet... the tails always are scraping....joe

adding a breath of fresh air daily...!!!

Here's mine using the MJP Carbon mounting set up.

Be sure to use the GWS EDF-40H if you are flying with 3s Lipo's.

I ordered mine and it just arrived yesterday while I was at work. I plan on hooking it up this weekend and after some flying I will try to post how it works. I just got the EDF-40H for now, I didn't want to get the mounting fin set if the fan didn't work too good. I got it so I can hopefully fly over grass without losing total tail control because of it getting stuck.

The ducted setup looks better for sure! Boyd, how is tail response with it? Does the motor on it hold up well?

Solid tail and the motor life has been very good.

I also have an EDF-40H on my Blade. Initially it put so much weight on the tail I couldn't get decent balance, even with the 3S lipo all the way in the nose. I chopped off about 2.5" of the tail boom, and I'm able to get the CG back under the main shaft. Unfortunately that shorter boom means the fan has to work harder to hold the tail.

It does hold... almost no wag... and no scraping tail. But nose-right is slooow.. the little fan just doesn't have much more to give than holding the tail steady. Not sure I like my results...

Tail weight & getting a correct CG was my first thought when I saw the pic Boyd put up. I really like the way it looks, but how does it balance?

I've had my eye on installing a ducted fan, too. I'm not thrilled to hear about cutting off a couple of inches of tail boom. That has got to have a negative effect on the moment-arm for that little fan. JiggerInc's results appear to be typical. Boyd, what have been your results? Putting some ballast in the nose certainly doesn't seem practical if I want to get it off the ground.

I'm flying 3s 1320mah TP packs forward and it balances fine. I also flew a scale micro HH-65 Dolphin and Comanche RAH-66and the EDF tails worked well there also.

And you didn't have to trim the tailboom on the "stock" BCP, Boyd?

So how does the ducted tail perform v/s stock tail. Would anyone recomend going this route. Any advice would be appreciated.

The ducted fan & tail look really sweet on the Blade. I'm anxious to hear what others will experience when converting over to this unit.

I installed mine 2 nights ago and have flown 2 test flights so far, each about 5-10 minutes in length, mostly to just test the balance and trims and see the tail response. First off I only got the EDF-40H, not the carbon fiber housing. I took the tail boom and cut the tail off about 1/2" in front of the tail housing. I then drilled a hole in the EDF-40H just behind the fan blades so I could run the boom through it and glue it to the motor housing inside. Doing that seems to hold the EDF-40H very stable on the tail, and I didn't have to cut much of the tail boom in the process. I used Dean's micro connectors to connect the EDF-40H to the wiring going down the tail. Because of the way I glued the boom I had to run the wiring on the outside, underneath the boom and zip-tie it. With just the EDF-40H on the tail and only cutting that small ammount off the tail I have my TP 1350mah Lipo battery all the way forward and my balance still seems a little off. The power is fine and the tail seems just as responsive as the stock setup, but I am able to land and fly out of grass just fine. One thing I did notice though is that the main motor seems pretty hot for the short flights and the 4in1 is a little warm. After some longer flights I will post some more on my experience.

Please keep the reports coming, my tail motor is currently out of comission and would like enough data on the ducted tail to make a choice about witch route to go. Would really like to know the longevity of this setup. Shame to park this heli because of the junky tail motor.

Figured I'd post an update on my EDF-40H experience. I have run about 4-5 20-25 minute flights through it now and the tail stays pretty cool. The response seems fine and I have solved all my balance issues by adding a small bit of weight to the nose. The tail works great and seems alot more steady than the stock tail for hovering. I have run into a big problem with it though. I have been practicing my side in hovering and as a result have had a few rough landings. I smacked the tail on the ground a few times but nothing hard enough to damage the main blades or the landing gear. It was enough to break the supports in the EDF-40H for the motor housing though. The supports just don't have a lot of give in them and are quite fragile for rough landings. I could see that being a problem for someone still learning who hits their tail every so often. As a result of the supports being broken I ended up breaking 1 of the fins of the blade also.

I'm very impressed with the ducted fan set up ,I cut the boom too short though, so I'm going to start over. I found some glue called goop at my local ACE hardware. It holds the fan onto the carbon fiber mount very well. I really enjoy flying from the lawn and not dealing with a tail rotor. The DD tail system works great ,but for now I can't get away from the ducted fan, i like the sound and the way it looks.
