Hey Dazzler and Steve_JR,
Back in the early 80's it was common practice to hold on to the tailboom while spooling up the machine. It made it easier to track the blades. Yup, that's how we did it. I even have an audio cassette of Walt Schoonard telling you to hang on to the tail boom while you advanced the throttle and hovered the maching a few inches off of the ground. Remember, that very few people could fly at the time and that was one means of tracking the blades before you actually knew how to fly.

We recently had a fatality over here (Dartford,England)
A young girl out walking was hit and killed by an out of control aeroplane. The plane was flying quite legally on an approved site, provided by the countys local council.A tragedy and no mistake.
there is an on going police investigation so our governing body for aeromodelling (BMFA),equivelant to your AMA I suspect, can not and will not post any comment at present.
Try the BMFA website for latest details.

Whew!

I had just landed from a hover and went to slow the blades and as i lent over i knocked the throttle on my chest i think as my other hand was on the disk in the middle and it started to lift.

I had to hold it down as it was spinning in me palm my hand got pretty hot i can tell you while i got to the throttle, still to this day i do not know how excatly i did it.

Now when i go near the heli the first thing that i do is flip it into throttle hold, i feel alot safer....

I have to say that flying plane into house thing, then the guy hiding really made me laugh. hard to!!! Another thing you guys who held the boom to track your blades are freaking nuts. Who in the world would do something like that. I wonder how many people lost their hands or at least the use of their hand. CRAZY

I did the blade strike to the leg bone too. When learning to fly, I used to use the lot of a Toys are Us. When the trucks would come in to drop a load, I would try to get the helicopter out of their way as quickly as I could. In my haste to move the heli, the blade tip caught my shin bone. Not too much blood, but when the blade stopped there was a hunk of skin on the blade tip....with little hairs on it.

I'm glad that you made it out ok.

I believe that most pilots including myself have a hard time believing how much damage ( quickly ) our helis can do.

Let's try to be safe!!

Very Best Regards

Kam
