some of us "old hands" have done and sometimes still do some prety stupid stuff.
holding the tail boom while bringing the helli into a hover, sorta, so we can check tracking is one of those sometimes done stupid things that used to be the norm 20 years ago.
that said, i do not do this sort of thing any more myself, but do hear of others ocaisionally that still do these things.

Accidents?

Well, other than running my R22 out of fuel..DUH.. I have been lucky so far. The only accident I have had was with a homelite 25cc engine that I converted to put in a 1/4 scale Cub. I was running it on a test stand to check the needles and prop rpm's. I just started it and with the choke on it was sputtering so I reached for the choke lever....right through the prop!!! Thank goodness the choke WAS ON and I was running a 16/8 wood prop, the engine quit....but not before tearing up my fingers pretty good. I was tired and shouldn't have been playing with it......lesson learned......NEVER have anything to do with planks!!! Just kidding, I should have gone for stiches I guess, I have some pics that I will try to scan and make you all throw up....hehehe.....

I had a very unhappy encounter with a set of 700s on my XCell Gasser. Took eight stitches to close the wound to my knee. Luckily it didn't hit any bone. (sigh) If that didn't teach me something, I don't know what would have

Anyhow, always think safety when approaching your helis. That's what I am now doing and professing at my field.

2 that I know of

A friend in Illinois was flying his Concept 30. Something happened while he was hovering at eyelevel and the heli started towards him. He ducked and turned his back, but too late. He had 3 huge gashes in his back that required many, many stitches and lots of Poor Sweet (Stupid) Babies from his wife. Looked like he'd been whipped! He has since passed away but not from a heli accident.

Another friend in the Portland area took a blade strike in the neck from his X-Cell 60, I think. Cut his carotid artery. Good thing friends where there to apply pressure to stop the bleeding and get him to the hospital.

He's fine now but doesn't fly much any more.

We're all on the edge with these things. Most of us are just lucky so far.

It can happen so fast, for so many reasons!

That's the reason I try not to fly alone.

Cause of Event

I can't decide if it was "Settling with Power" "low level Wind shear"
A " micro burst" or a banana. but I slipped and busted my ass and
broke something around my elbo.
I can still fly, but I will use this to try to get more sponsorships and hopefully get the "Wiregrass Stickshakers" one of our club names to
help me fuel my helicopter, etc.

Mark, Can you cut my grass?

Hey we have to come up with our helicopter club name!!

I found out why my best flight ever was at the noon time demo at ircha.

Karen was talking dirty to me!

She said (Grease, Grime, Dirt, pollution, Dust)

WATCH OUT FOR AIRBAGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT PROPERLY ADJUSTED IN A AIRBAG EQUIPPED VEHICLE.
You will know either sunvisor ,steering wheel or glovebox will have yellow sticker saying SRS(suplementary restraint system) or airbag
I've done training on airbag saftey and yes a factory mechanic in Australia was installing a car radio in a brand new car, his workmate stuck his head in the drivers side window to see what was happening at the same time the other bloke probed a wire with his ohmmeter unfortunatly it was airbag circut which deployed the bag and broke his neck and killed him!! So watch out fitting the remote r/c charging socket!!!!
Most only need 1.5 volts in the wrong place to set them off!! similar to a electric explosive detonator,a static charged polystyrene cup is good for several thousand, plastic folder several hundred !rub it on your plastic cloths then play with your hair
most airbags are starting to deflate 40 milli seconds after deployment begins !!,it takes approx 100 milli seconds to blink
.bag front surface travels at ~300kph
and for you petrol heads with approx equiv of 200 horsepower. Also generally once one goes off they all do ,both sides front and rear seats(if equipped) and belt pretensioners, here in NZ most get written off if deployed as it is to expensive to replace!$1-5 grand per bag ~$800-1000 per tensioner some cars have 4-8 bags and 4 tensioners
The most dangerous time as a driver is around town traveling slow with no belt leaning all over the steering wheel,as the seatbelt pretensioner is useless.
After all is said and done I wish my car had one as they do save lives.
Most firemen here have training and a special strengthened cover they put over the wheel before working on a crash victim. Ive seen one go off in a controlled enviroment and yes they go bang loudly and very quickly. BE SAFE!! ignorance is dangerous

Donlynn'
Thanks for the warning. I've been a career firefighter/ EMT 20 years this coming december. I have only been injuried once while tring to get a cat out of a burning apartment building, it bit me on the hand, Yea, I know don't take your glove off for anything. I still like cats. That said, I would welcome any official documentaion of the broken neck incident via air bag that you spoke of, it would be of great help to our training battalion.
Getting back to the original post I checked out the AMA site and could not find an injury report page, and I have not seen anything in M.A. about the poor guy in AZ whom got struck by his own aircraft. Perhaps AMA does't want to provid the ammo for any anti-RC groups.

What was my tag line? AMA 139721

dang Bladerunner

OUCH!!!! Putting your hand through a prop of a gasser.. dang.. that hurt!! I'm hoping not to do that with my Q75xl on my Staudacher!!!

The only thing I could report was a near accident.. my heli was experiencing PCM lockout and I kept getting intermittant control of it.. I landed it and it locked out again on touchdown. The heli tipped a little and the NHP Razor Pro's struck the boom and sliced the taiboom like butter. The tail rotors went flying into the pit area, missing the spectator line by 4 feet, and about 4" away from some of my friend's planes in the pits. That could have been bad. There were a lot of kids playing in the spectator area.

Oh.. be careful around broken blades!!! Those NHP Razor's can leave some very small carbon splinters if mishandled after a crash!!

Whoever said these are just toys never had an accident (or near accident) yet.. These are machines capable of serious injury. (but fun as h--l !! )

Tax write off

Greg Poppel at ircha introduced rusty at ircha during his demo and
said that he was flying for bergen, v-blades, etc, etc and also he
said he was flying for a tax write off.

So my new sponsor is the IRS, I'm flying for a tax write off!

Sometimes older and wiser don't belong in the same sentence.

Anyone would think that just because a heli is fun, it's also cuddly and cute with pink fur on it. Like who holds the tailboom of a spooled-up helicopter? Worse, who here would volunteer to hold the tailboom of a helicopter spooled up helicopter designed 20 years ago?

Utter madness, totally predictable outcome, may as well stick your hand in a CNC machine and get it over with.

Amazing.
