Please post any near misses are injuries to date!

The reason I'm interested is that we can all learn from each other!

What about the one TB said about the guy that got his eyes and nose taken out when he accidently flew into himself while flying way to close? I had never heard that story before. There was a rep that got his hand cut off in an accident.

However, you'll want to know sources because these stories tend to grow a little when passed from person to person.

About 15 years ago I just came down from a hover and needed to adjust the needle valve a click or two. I didn't want to wait for the blades to stop so as it came to rest with the blades still turning a little fast, I reached under and made my adjustment. However, as I was pulling myself back to stand up, I lost my balance and my right shoulder droped down into the turning blades and WACK!!! Woodies went flying everywhere! It felt like getting hit by a baseball bat. I still have the scar where the first tip just made a clean slice. The other blade was the one that hit me square on and knocked me back on my ass. Yes I learned my lesson...... do planks count on this thread too?

i took a carbon prop to into the top of my left hand, by the thumb. 16 stitches later, I am still alive and flying, but much waryer of spinning things.

Speaking of planes, one of my friends took a prop to his knuckles, lost the skin and some blood, but nothing major thank god.

Last Spring

My 30 size chopper charged at me and broke both 550 FG blades across my back, shoulder, and upper arm.

Not to bad after a change of drawers.
Just streaked and bruised like h**l for a couple/three weeks.

Real darn lucky.

A couple of weeks back while the head was spooling down I began to place my hand on the hub to slow it down faster and got my leg into the blades. Luckily I was not using V blades because the damage would have been worse. The NHP Razor pro split and broke when it hit the front of my lower leg bone and the other blade cut my jeans open. All I can say is a guardian angel was watching me. Talking about this to my friend TomS he mentioned a very important point. Take the cell phone with you so help can be summoned. The Huntington field is in a very remote location and barely any fliers during the week so the chance of somebody finding you is very slim. This could have been disastorus if my calf was severed instead of the bone taking the hit. I laid on the flight line with teary eyes for while because it hurt to bad to walk back to the truck.

So, try to fly with a buddy or at minimum take a cell phone that will have coverage from your flying site. Just remember to test the phone while you are laying on the ground to simulate the actual condition if you are down.

Mongo, Mt. Pleasant

Howdy!!!!
Hey Mongo, I was at Mt Pleasant last year and will be again this year.. I think I talked to you, then. Were you the fella with the longish beard who had a YS 91 in a (I think) PHI heli??? I was the tallest guy there, flying a loud gas X-cell.. I raced Chris Bergen on Sun. morning.. Lot's of fun.. Hope to see you there..

Gas race

Hey Jeff,

Ready to go again? We have been doing mods to the Zenoah engines for more power. if all goes well, I'll be taking on all comers!!

Last year, Jeff and I were the only gassers racing. There was a third, but had engine probs.

Maybe a little cash up for grabs would bring more gassers out for racing. any one up for it?

Barbary: You are one lucky person! I have heard of people permanently loosing fingers after a boom strike while holding the boom.

Squirrel: A couple of weeks back while the head was spooling down I began to place my hand on the hub to slow it down faster and got my leg into the blades.

Hey! That's a real common accident. Someone local here, it's happened too! I think I have a picture of someone's leg as he's ripped up a pair of jeans doing that number too.

The key here is patience. Let the heli spool itself down. When the blades slow down enough that it's NOT dangerous, then go up there and slow it down with your hands. In case it hits your legs at this speed, it won't be as damaging.

I've had the main blades hit my legs on a spool down. Blades weren't going fast enough to do any kind of damage. It hit a funny bone though, and I almost subsequently fell on top of my heli . (Imagine a guy crouching over heli to mash on the head button. But before he reaches it, mainblades hit his right leg. Guy looses his balance, tosses his radio to the side; and ends up on all fours just almost impaling himself on the head button of his heli.) I'm a klutz.

I would think that the AMA would keep track of injuries that happen via radio controlled aircraft. I have to question the validity of some claims. Photos are good you know seeing is believing. In my line of work, a rumor about a firefighter getting his neck broken by an airbag activating in a car while he was stabilizing the drivers neck went around. We contacted many of our safety organizations and were never able to find the guy or any legitimate reports of this incident. So my question, does the AMA track injuries? and how do you get a report of injuries from them?

What was my tag line? AMA 139721

Question: How do you have a boom strike while holding on to the boom, are you actually spooling up the engine while holding the boom or what? Daz...
