Any of you folks running any type of deans BASE
antenna? If so where the heck would you mount it
on the Falcon? I have used these for years with no
problems.. I was just wondering if anybody has one
in there Century Heli's?
Thanks

I have the deans on my hawk Se, only 1 flight so far but also used them on my older concept, I just use servo tape to mount it to the top of the rear landing gear strut between the frames, and then just stick a wire tie around it to make sure it stays. never had problems with them in the concept, and no glitches on my first test flight on the SE

the Deans antennas are notoriuos for cracking around the base...

"While I've flown with the Deans antennas for years. I've had at least two fail on me. On one the antenna broke loose from the board, and on the other there was no physical defect, but the internal coli evedently went bad. I started getting glitces in a hover (flying FM,not PCM) Fortunately this fialure did not cause a crash. Not knowing what was failing but listening to the helicopter, I quite flying and paid a visit to the radio manufacturer's shop (Airtronics). They trouble-shot the problem and discovered it was the antenna! The range with the deans antenna disconected was better than it was plugged in! What a worthwhile visit! Because of theses failures I've stopped using Deans antennas."

Ray you Rule, Thanks for everything you have shared with us all!

Look for the Revolution antenna by, JR. (funny enough it is rummored that they are made by Dean's) They are $10. I think Heliproz or Ricks shound have them. Secure both ends of the antenna to prevent vibration induced failures.

Falcon whip location

I made a simple L shaped backet for my whip. It is the Revolution model. I screwed it into the side of the radio tray where the switch is. This is a low vibration area.

It points forward into the canopy. Nice and clean and I have had ZERO problems running these this way on ALL of my heli I have ever owned.

And, Yet another great idea!
Thank you very much! for this tip.. Thinking
I will go that way!.. or the rear.. dunno yet!
Even had one for YEARS with cracks and its still good.
Guess I should change that one.. *oops* thats on a plane
now anyways... but I will change it out.. I have deans on anything
I fly.. Was just kinda hard to figure out where to place it on the
Falcon , without a problem.. I can;t stand that darn long wire
hanging and getting into my roter blades! *yicks*
THANKS!

Revolution antenna

I would tell you to use the Revolution antenna !!, because it has a covering !!

BUT,,
both Deans and the Revolution antennas are made by the same company !!

I used the Revolution antenna and had good luck !!

If you damage one of these antannas in any way, toss it !!

VERY GOOD ADVISE

The Wasp hit it spot on.... If you have a crash, rebuild and find glitching or lock outs then look to the whip first.

I had one that after a crash looked perfect visibly. But, my range was reduced noticeably. While it was still a good range it was a reduction. I flew it anyhow and nearly lost my Falcon. Got locked out from 20 feet up in a hover. Failsafe returned control in just enough time to stop the fall and climb back up. I immediately landed and killed the motor.

I had a spare Revolution on stand by and plugged it up. Whalaaaaaaah!!!! Range check was back to normal and I have been flying issue free since.

So, after a crash even if the whip looks ok be sure to do a range check and compare it to your prior working range. These whips work awesome but you have to be cautious to do your preflights. Actually same goes for a full length antenna wire. Watch for nicks and bad bends.

Whip Antenna Mounting

I advise if you want to go the whip route stick with Revolution, but as previously mentioned....always preflight the whip very well. Can be very convenient, however they are a tad bit delicate.

I have previously posted a few pictures of my Raven in my gallery (originally to depict header tank placement)... I have a couple of good shots of where I was able to mount my antenna under the canopy. Was actually brought to my attention by a Century field rep in Alabama... make sure that you do a good range check though.

Great protection for the antenna and keeps it cleaner than mounting on the skids.

Enjoy

just to clarify... I used two small wire ties and ran the whip along the cable wrap that I wrapped the servo wires in)

antenna was bad

Finishing up a series of test flights, I have had one burning issue with my Raven... absolutely horrible range checks. After some minor glitches the other day and almost losing the heli in the river, I started to suspect the whip. Placed the original antenna back on and problems solved. Not sure what failed... it is a fairly new Revolution, no visible damage.... it just went bad.

Whips look neat, but sometimes they can be a "hit and miss" issue. I guess it's in the luck of the draw.... Ladies and Gents, if you do run a whip antenna, just be sure to preflight it well... it's not worth it to lose a thousand dollar machine to an eight dollar antenna

Fly safe,
Cory
