e-Electric Conversions > Price of Raptor 50 conversion?

Hello Everyone,

I have recently gotten a Hummingbird Elite 3D pro and find myself flying it much more than my Raptor 50 due to the mess and fuss of fueling, starting, cleaning, etc. I have been thinking of selling my gasser plane (since I don't fly it much) and converting my Raptor to electric. I don't know a lot about choosing motors, speed controllers, batteries. I have seen "the box" as well as some other conversions while browsing this forum and other websites as well. I am looking for the best bang for the buck of course. I can do some mild 3D but no serious thrashing really. I basically need to know how much it would cost to convert my 50 to electric to suit my flying style. I would like to be capable of at least 8-10 minutes flight time. I know it won't be cheap but I don't have unlimited funds to put into it.

I agree......I have a Raptor 50 and a 60 along with the T Rex. I fly the Rex more and more than I do my Nitro helis because it is smoother and no mess. I have found a few sites that have a Rappy E converstion and I'm not sure which way to go. I don't have deep pockets but I do already have a good charger. I think I'm gonna go brushless because I played with them a little on my rc cars and it looks like they are the way to go now a days. I'm just looking for someone to point me in the right direction as to a good conversion kit with good parts support incase I crash and burn.

Thanks.

If it doesn't fit force it.....If it breaks then it needed to be replaced anyway !!!

If you want inexpensive this isn't the place to be. A raptor conversion is about $1000. So if you allready have a charger and the rest of the helicopter, that's how much it'll cost to get a high performance package (www.tppacks.com). If you want to just fly around at a low headspeed you could get by for less money, but to get good flight times you'll have to go Lipo. Right now only Thunder Power makes packs that fit the RappE and they're about $400 each. You can get at least 10mins of flight time flying around normally.

That is about what I was thinking it would be when all was said and done. I am actually thinking of waiting to see how the Century Swift turns out. It looks to be a little smaller and lighter so maybe not quite as much to get good performance out of. I know it won't be cheap either but maybe not as bad and a little lighter also.

When you get to the 30-50 size helis, cost of heli itself is a very small percentage of the overall package. The motor/ESC and specially battery are the most expensive component.

I've gone through two iterations of Raptor electric conversion, first without box and second with (see my gallery). I am telling you, go with the tppacks.com package. Because you will not be satisfied with anything else, and you will eventually end up spending more trying to improve the performance. Buy cheap buy twice.

The Swift may turn out fine, but right now it's a big question mark. It will be lighter and smaller than the RappE. Usually lighter disk loading means it won't handle the wind all that great, but I'm sure it would be cheaper than a RappE to get the same performance.

Woth the Wait?

I worked on some head parts for a new heli for the same company that makes your T-Rex, it is aimed at compeating with the Stinger 6 & the Swift. Going to be slightly less than a 30 size, about 525mm blades.

RappE are really just a fun project and something to be done if you don't mind spending money on an experiment. Its great fun to do and a cool project but is not that ecomonically sound. Raptor's are meant to be cheap but if you add up the costs of the tppacks conversion, you are getting close to the price of a Fury ION!

Apart from the upcomming Align heli, another option is the E-Tiger from Audacity models, this is another not well known about project that looks promising. The Tiger 50 is a very nice heli that is getting rave reviews, its a simple low parts count eCCPM heli that has the same ancestory as the Robbe Ornith but greatly improved and the Tiger is a 50 size Vs the Ornith's 30 Size. Check the "New and emerging heli" forums for info on the glow version.

Might be a bit heavy for a conversion in it's current form but Audacity are planning a new E version. Compared to the glow version, the E version will have the CCPM layout simplified as the starter shaft will be removed plus as it is being designed as an E heli; weight & battery location will be a factors the heli will address. The very attractive thing about the Tiger is the cost of the heli (glow version retails at $299) and the parts are cheaper than Raptor parts.

Hopefully this will help to give more options if you don't mind waiting a while for some of the new stuff to come along.
