e-Electric Conversions > Bell Blokes Electric Hirobo 30 Lama Air Lift.

Well folks there you have it, proof at last that the Hirobo 30 Lama electric conversion works. And that not only does fly, but it's actually doing something useful!
Flight duration is 20 mins, not as good as the Bell but it's still respectable.
It makes quite a din too, especially in a dive. You can really hear that extra blade thrashing away.... Very nice.
These shots were taken at the Vario Scale day in England at the weekend.
The first days Lama flying was a bit scary to say the least. Having only flown it on a calm, still day it behaved rather differently on a very windy day. So I decided to approach Len Mount and Peter Wales who were well.... Very, very approachable. They gave me a whole host of tips and advice on multi blade set-up, and by the next day I was tanking around the sky in the wind! Fantastic! So thankyou Gentlemen.
It even seems quite happy with a payload.

And there is even a video in blackhawk UK s gallery under Lama zip or at the page below.
http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/gallery/13430/
I must add at this point that this was the Lamas first ever windy day TEST fight and things got off to a shaky start because I was fiddling with my rate switches.
Why make things worse with the under slung load? Well as I said before, if you are gonna crash testing a heli at a show, just do it with style!
I also flew too fast for scale because I wanted to keep my airspeed up for this test flight, and get an idea of the electric Lamas performance.
Later on that day I flew it again much slower and with some more rate adjustmets and it was lovely. Will post some video soon I hope, with better more scalelike flying.

Information about your Lama

Hello Bell Broke.

I made the same conversion as you.

not exactly the same, I use the original main Gear ratio.
with a slow rpm/v motor (Plettenberg HP 300/25/A3 heli 920rmp/v with a 5S1P 3200 lipo battery )

I'm very interrest by your experiment with the Hirobo 3 blades rotor head!

I try this rotor head with the wood blades.

impossible to fly, the engine heats too mutch! and it 's difficult to control it.

do ou have a vitual swath in your TX ?

Don't use the wooden blades, they are too light. I used 550mm 110g SABs. (Scale sized).
Put plenty of weight in the nose to give in a slightly nose heavy C of G.
Next.... don't fly it on a windy day! Not yet anyway.
As for the Plettenberg HP 300/25/A3 overheating, are you sure that motor is big enough for your heli, I'm not that familiar with the Plettenberg HP 300/25/A3 but I did a search on one and although the rpm/volt set-up is right, the motor might not be big enough for your heli. Just a thought. Let us know how you get on.

Hello.

thank's for your reponse.
I try with the same blades, 550mm but 125gr.

the HP300/25/a3 heli is very good for this application.
my model has flown for six month.

time of flight, approximately 9mn.

what is the weight of your Lama?
mine weights 3700 gr. with battery.

do you have a vitual swath mixing program in your TX ?
use it ?

I have some photos. but I don't know how to insert them !

Hi tanguy, 125g blades are better than 110g so that's good.
My Lama weighs 5kg!!! It does have 8000mah packs though.
However I only get 12mins with them, and that's to the limit!
The extra weight does make it very stable, but your set-up may be better.
I don't have vitual swath mixing program in my TX. (what's that?)
In your original post you said the motor was getting hot, why was that?
Might look at Giro stabilisation on the cyclic, may help when it's windy.

Hi BB.

about " vitual swash mixing program" I wanted to say " mixing rotor head phasing". it's look like the "helectronix mixer unit" (without gyros).
excuse me for my poor english (I'm french, you know :-)) )

"" my motor was getting hot ""
it was my first time with the 3 blades head.. (with the original Hirobo's wood blades)
and there was too much pitch. (+12)

question:
what is your rotor head rpm?

<<>>

do you use the "helectronix mixer"?

help me
I wants to know how to insert photographs! in RR

Hi Tanguy, my headspeed is 1450rpm but that is really too slow, it needs to be at lest 1600+.
I don't use the "helectronix mixer," or any other kind of mixing at all, no giros yet either, just seat of pants.

Exellent! They look so much better painted, less toylike. Here are some more recent pics of mine in its natural habitat.

Bell Bloke, what Lipo charger are you using to charge your batteries. I am in the process of getting what I need to make the Century Bell 47 electric like you did. Any help would be appreciated. Can you give me a list of components. Does the Hacker C50 fit without to much modification?

Hi there, you will need to order an extra engine mount, then just get a bicycle innertube cut a strip of 1inch rubber and wrap the bottom of the motor with it then sandwich the motor between the engine mounts. see pictures.
The chargers I use are 2 Astro flights.

Bell 47 build up link is http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t136562p1/
Also look at my Hawk, the mechanicals are identical.
http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t184118p1/
This outlines the complete build.
All the best, Bell Bloke.
PS. Don’t forget your ferrite ring, that must go on the speed controller to receiver wire or your radio may suffer chronic interference at 70% power, and you will crash. Better still Futaba do an inline filter on an extension wire priced at £9.

Hi Bell..

I have 2 chargers, a Robbe infinity 2 (with lipo soft. 5s max) good for a standard charged
and the LipoCard of "Schulze" a very good charger for lipo battery.
see Here http://www.schulze-elektronik-gmbh.de/index_uk.htm
it's possible to download the instruction manual.
for the Century Bell 47, I don't know the machinery!.
what is the gear ratio ??

for me the weight is the most important.
8-9 mn Flight with the ligtest batteries!
so for that, find the best rpm/v for the motor and the good batteries voltage .
the rpm of 50 glow engine is aproximatly 15000-17000.(engine use in the Bell 47)
so if you want use 6s (for example , 22v)
17000/22=773 rpm/v for your motor.
me I use a motor with 800-950 rpm/v.

after, to gain weight!
transform H1 to CCPM with light servos.
don't use clutch!
use UBEC..... and so on.

Hi Tanguy, Century may have an instruction manual on their site.
The gear ratio on the Bell 47 is: 12 - 1 with the 20 tooth Joker pinion. So the motor I use is a Hacker C50-16XL rated at 1050rpm per volt which I run at 22.2volts
The Lama ratio is; 9.5 - 1 so I use a Hacker C50-21XL rated at 750rpm per volt which I also run at 22.2volts. This is because the gear ratios on the Lama are difficult to change.
So 800-850rpm per volt sould be fine, don't go over 1000rpm per volt because with big blades on a 3 bladed head, it will chew up the main gear.
If you try and lower the rpm from the controller it will get hot and may cut-out, so a good motor match is important.
All The Best Bell Bloke.

Hi Bell

my motor for the Lama are 910Kv
but I use 5S lipo (18.5v)
more light!!

I have a question about your 3 bladed head:
what is your max pitch and your hoover pitch ??

For the Bell your configuration are good
but why do you use 6S?
with a 5S and a 1200kv it's good
more lighter battery.

Hi Tanguy, my Lama hover pitch is a very high 9 degrees. This is because I am trying to run the slowest possible head speed I can, to give a scale look to the blades.
I run 6s because the higher the voltage the lower the current draw, and having 2 11.1volt packs makes for easier charging in the field and easier to hide than 1 big pack.
Also because the helicopter is heavier, it is more stable in the air.
All the best Bell Bloke.
