Well, if it idles great, that means he has the hole drilled in the right place, and it's the right size too.
Describe the "die-ing out in midrange." If you listen closely to it. You should be able to tell, if the dying out is a too rich or too lean sound. Then all you need do is adjust with screwdriver as necessary.
If all else fails, rip that engine out of that heli, and stomp on it a few times. It will make you feel better! (Just kidding!).
Seriously though, get that engine on a test stand, so you can dial in the correct needle settings and be able to try different things in less time.
The first thing I'd try is spooling up with the glo-plug starter (before you rip it out). If you can get it into the midrange (or a little further) this way. Then either your glo-plug is ready to die, or you are too rich. If it still acts exactly the same way (as without the glo plug starter), then most likely you are too lean.
If this engine hasn't been run in a long time, there's probably some gunk in the carb that's causing the very screwed up needle settings. Save yourself some trouble and clean that stuff out.
