How do you guys feel about this radio for my Tiger 50? Would the 5th servo be strong enough for the tail? It's the Airtronics RD8000 w/(5) 322 FM Heli set, 1000pk, just in case the link doesn't work.

Thanks

I'm using the RD6000Super on my Tiger and it works fine so the 8000 would be even better since setup for a gov would be easier.

Here's a couple things I should mention: The 322's will work fine but if your used to digitals then they will seem a little slow. That's just my observation from watching other machines fly with digitals. I have the 322's and I'm very happy with them. I would not use one on the tail though. I bought the GY-401 w/9254 serv and it works very well.

The other thing is the 1000 pack...don't get it! I'm using a 1200 and it isn't enough. I can only get 3 flights out of it and it's gone. I'm going to be upgrading to an 1800 before long.

This is my first computer radio and I found setup to be pretty simple. The Futaba guys were a little confused by it but I think it's all in what you get used to. It doesn't matter what radio you start off with, you're going to be in the learning curve for awhile!

All in all, I really like ATX equipment, I've been using them for years and they have done very well for me. I was just flying my one heli the other night with an ATX that's 15yrs old and it still works great. But hey, that's just MHO.

Thanks for your reply. I'm just getting into Helicopter's, I didn't realize the 1000pak may not be enough, to be honest with you, I didn't even know what it meant. I could tell you all about electric car batteries though

Thanks again!

Cool, welcome to heli's!!

I looked at the same stuff you are, when I was buying mine a few months ago. I'm not working with an endless budget so I went with the bare minimums and for the type of flying I do it's working just fine.

As far as the packs go, I learned the hard way about how long a 600 pack would last! Went dead in flight! Good thing I was only 3' off the ground! It did a pirouette all by itself and then I had just enough to get it back to normal flight mode and shut it down. Didn't even crash thank goodness!! Once it was on the ground I walked over to see what was up and I couldn't even get a servo to move!! That's too close!
So that's when I upgraded to the 1200mah pack and I now realize that's not even enough. Most of the guys I know are running 1800's so that's what I would go with.

Good luck with the Tiger, I'm really happy with mine! I got it tuned in really good this weekend with help from some EXTREMELY GOOD pilots !! ( beast & wattybotts ) And I even had the guts to do my first flips on Sunday!! YAAHHOOOO!! Can't wait to see what's next!! Rolls maybe??
If there's anything I can help you with, don't hesitate to ask

Thanks Andy. My budget is also tight, selling everything I have around the house on E-bay to buy this stuff. I did spend some of my E-bay money on G3, figured I would need it. I would like to get the 50 Hyper and probably the RD8000 or the Futaba 7CHP and of course the GY-401 (not that I really know the difference at this point, but it seems to be very popular). I will be slowly building this Tiger ( I had plenty of time to polish all the aluminum pieces ( even the body pins are polished). Take Care Andy

Andy,

I forgot to ask you. What engine and muffler are you using on your Tiger?

I used the straight OS50SX and I just put an MP2Q on last week. Made a big difference!!

Do you have anyone around you that is using the ATX radios? Or the Futaba? Having someone that knows how to program one will really help. It took me about 2 evenings to get mine figured out which I guess isn't too bad. The 7C is an excellent radio as well and if you know someone who can help you out with it, it might be a better purchase. But, if you're going to be learning on your own, then the ATX will be more bang for your buck with out question.

If you go here : http://www.raptortechnique.com/ you'll find some really good articles on setting up the ATX with the GY-401. I downloaded the article for myself and followed it step by step and it was perfect. Made it really simple too. There are some guys here on RR that really know their stuff when it comes to programming the ATX's also. Just ask, they'll help. Or just do a search and you'll more than likely find what you need, that's what I did. Don't be afraid to PM me, I usually check here at least once a day sometimes more.

Sounds like you're on your way.

I'd be careful buying stuff that won't help you at this point. I assume you're still learning?

You need to burn fuel and definately spend some time on the simulator.. It can save you a LOT of money at this point.

I run Duralite 4000ma packs... I fly all day on a single charge. They are a little pricy but, they'll keep you in the air all day and are lighter than a standard 1800ma pack....

This chopper does not need the HYPER 50. I am certain it will do anything you can or would want to do on the standard engine with a so-so pipe. The MP2 is awesome and will grab some more power but, that's something you may not really need at this point.

I'm not familiar with AIRTRONICS but, I know a lot of heli guys do use them and they seem to work fine for them. Its not the radio as much as it is the pilot. As long as the radio is CAPABLE of the necessary 120degree swash plate mixing, then you're good to go! I do think that a decent gyro is a must.... The GY401 is in my opinion, the only real entry level gyro.... A great gyro will help you get on with learning to fly instead of 'chasing your tail'..... I think it sounds like your radio is fine.. Like Andy said, RAPTOR TECHNIQUE has a lot of good tips for all the radio setups...

The main thing you need to invest in is ------- fuel...

Glad you've joined the fun!

Thanks RDW. Yes, I am definitely still learning, even still building! At this point, I could go either way on the engine, I'm sure you're correct about the O.S. Hyper, I was even thinking about buying a new TT50 from Heliproz for $99, then I found out the mounting holes aren't the same as the O.S. ( I'm a neat freak, so I don't want to do anything crazy just to get the engine mounted perfectly) I'm still researching the muffler, I see lots of good stuff on the mp2 a and few have mentioned the Hatori 546 and the Zimmerman 2615. I like the looks of the muffler on the Tiger that's on the box, Do you have any idea what it is?

Thanks for your help, I will definitely consider an upgraded battery.

I'll be honest with you, I'm not real fond of the TT engines. I think if you can go the distance and get an OS50 SX-H (non hyper) you'll have this for a long time to come and it won't limit you...

I'm not certain about the pictured muffler but, it looks a lot like a Mavrikk or something like that... I really wouldn't put a LOT into a muffler at this point...

Good luck

I agree on the 50 non hyper, I'm using the straight 50 and it's working great, I can't imagine needing anymore! The guys that flew it this weekend commented on how well it was working.

As far as the muffler goes, RDW is correct about not needing to spend a lot on a muffler ........wait.....wasn't that a comercial?? "I'm not gonna pay a lot for this muffler!!" .....oops, sorry for the sidetrack But anyway, there are two ways of looking at it, 1) If you're not planning on upgrading later and you don't really need a high perfomance system then don't spend the extra $$$ there are a lot of good systems out there for around $35-$45.
2) If you thinking of buying a cheap one now and then upgrading later when you get the extra cash then by all means, wait till you have the money to get the one you want!! there's no point in buying one now for $35 and then 2 or 3 months down the road paying another $75 for the one you wanted in the first place cause now you have $110 in your system instead of $75!! See what I mean?? Don't ask me how I know this.
And remember, your muffler is something you'll have for a long time, just like your engine, so get the one you want now, it'll be worth it in the long run.
