Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Irvine .36 problems

Hey,
I keep bothering you all here but this is the best forum I have found for RC Heli's....
Anyway, I think am going to have to buy a new engine but am not sure. My problem is..you know the bit that you put the drill type starter in, well when I turn that it like gets stuck and I have to move it with my hand. Once I get past the stiff bit it like makes a popping in the exhust. Then it will turn freely and then get stiff again....Is this something I shoudl worry about?

Thanx in advance.

I have an irvine .36, starts great for me every time!
the popping sound is normal as is the stiffness when you get to the top of the cylinder, the air is compressed

If it is REALLY hard to turn then it sounds like you might have one of three things happening to me;
1) slight hydro lock
2) a messed up 1 way bearing
3) your starter isn't powerful enough

Take out the glow plug and crank the engine, see what happens. Also, be sure to crank the engine with no fuel line on the carb to be sure there is no fluid in the cylinder.

I tried starting the engine without a glow plug and a fuel line....It tries to start but that is as far as it goes. It keeps trying then stops. I am using a JP Power Torque Series II Universal Engine Starter.
My friends said that I have flooded the engine..If this is true how to I get rid of all the fuel in the engine?

Thanx again.

removing the glow plug and cranking the engine will pump the excess fuel out. "flooding" would be what i meant by hydro lock.

If it won't go, and forces you to overcrank the engine then the glow plug may be no good. if it tries and stops, your needle valve may be open a little too far, letting too much fuel into the cylinder

lol Sorry m8 I haven't been to heli's that long.
ok So I took out the glow plug and started up my engine it goes round nicely but when I put the glow plug back in it gets stiff again. It works good when I take out the engine plug. But no good without it in..LOL
I recently purchased this plug on Monday I think OS number 7 plug.....
I hope this little extra info helps at all.
Thanx again.

Sounds like you really should join a club, post a message on the forum of www.rcflyers.co.uk and find someone near you, are you a BMFA member, they will tell you your local club or check www.bmfa.org

Good luck

Sounds like an "ABC" engine to me maybe your starter setup is not up to the task

Take it along on Saturday if you can, someone will be glad to check it out, but if you buy a stronger starter and the engine is hydrlocked you WILL bend the conrod and probably wreck the one way bearing in the clutch as well.

A post on rcflyers will find someone near you and they are really helpful, anybody with glow engines can check it out even the car guys.

BTW, Are you using a fully charged car battery or equivalent for the starter ?

Wait!

Before you spend money for a new starter try connecting the starter to the battery in your car. The battery you are using at present may not be completely charged or not have sufficient capacity to turn over a tight engine.

Gell cell batteries are notorious for not having much capacity when put under a load.

This forum does help alot.
I am thinking my battery isn't charged enough so I have put it on charge now and I'll leave for 17 hours or something. I did run my starter from the mains but I was told it is not as good as with using a 12v battery so am hoping after I charge it should work.

My heli now turns over better after I left it for a while ticking over to get ri of the hydrolock..Thanx all for the advise
