Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Does Heli fuel kill grass?

May someone please direct me to a disclaimer of sorts that will describe how heli fuel (specifically exhaust and exhaust oil) will not kill grass when it is exposed to it. I'm trying to convince someone and it would be great to whip out an official source document.

Thanks in advance!

Based on our experince here i Norway flying on a grass football field
i am sorry to inform that the grass will die.

The take off area full of light spots after one week after flying, the spots is than expanding to an circle of approx 0,5 meter and the grass is more or less completely dead in two or three weeks.

We have to change the grass in this areas.

This is craeting a problem with the football field manager , so we are looking for a new field now.

grass

Yep, it will kill the grass big time. Little brown/yellow spots in a few days every place you ran the engine up before take off.

It will just make small circles or dots in the grass about 4 or 5 inches in dia. As soon as a rain comes they will green right back up. So the answer is NO we dont kill the grass, only make small discolorations that go away when it rains.

I think that is what is causing the so called "Crop Circles" in Europe that the believe came from Alien Space Craft. Probably just some
"Good Ole Englishmen" and their RC heli's !!!!

My motto is this..Fly...Rebuild...Fly

Thanks -

I'm new to the hobby and there isn't a local field so I'm hopping around to areas in the neighborhood. I can't use one area that I would like to because of the "kill the grass" issue.

Hey, Will - you sure are perdy!

We don't need no stinking crop circles.

I too fly around here in various places. I use a rubber 3'X4' door matt. It rolls up easily, it does not need to be staked down and it almost eliminates any trace left by the chopper. It also goes along way towards keeping your chopper nice and sparkling.I sometimes flip it over and use it to sit on.

any model engine fuel will kill grass.......

around here (where there are sod farms) the farmers will not allow any glo-powered (or gas) aircraft. If they see someone with one they may shoot you.

Some grass is more resistant than others and may green back after a while. But repeated and constant exposure to fuel and exhaust will kill the grass off.

I highly doubt you'll find any evidence supporting your hope.

Jbrundt,

Not all Sod Farms are like that. The Davenport R/C club's field IS a sod farm, and they fly glow models there.

As for killing grass with exhaust, I think only in the extreme cases where the hot exhaust is directed directly into the grass for extended periods, which seldom happens with helis, since most people don't sit on the ground long with their engines above idle. Most of the brown circles I see around our fields are from planks with horizontal-mounted engines that have the exhaust deflector an inch off the ground. Everyone who has been around R/C planes for more than two seconds has seen a planker straddle the tail while he runs the plane at full throttle for a minute or two scorching the hell out of the grass under the exhaust. There are a lot of these little circles that are more than just browned, there are many that are blacken and charred down to the soil.

I have never noticed any dead grass at our flying field. Lots of planks, and several heli's fly here. Maybe North Carolina grass is nitro resistant!

If you spill the fuel on it it will kill it sure as sh**. But it's the oil residue from the smoke that coats the grass blades and chokes 'em out, can't respire properly. If you only sat on the ground for a few seconds it would be a small area, prolonged spool-up or very low hovering increase the kill zone.

Glow fuel spills during fueling will cause the grass to turn brown but it does not kill the grass, as I said earlier it would green back up when it rains. Heli's seems to brown the grass by the exhaust heat and some burnt fuel residue. Now a gasoline spill will KILL the grass. It will literally leave a bald spot showing the dirt which will not repair itself until the following season. I bought one of these but have not yet tried it.
