Kyosho Caliber 30 & 60 - Concept - Nexus > Nexus main gear backlash issues

I have recently gone through three!!! 86T main gears on a Nexus 30. This is the heli I use to practice on so it does get its share of abuse. The gears however have all gone within the last 60 days. I have planted it hard a couple times so this most likely is the cause. The manual shows that you should use the thickness of two sheets of paper between the main gear and the tail rotor control gear. i have always just installed them together without using the paper adjustment. My question is this: Does the liklihood of chipping the gear teeth decrease in proportion to the gap or increase? I would think that if there is no play or space between gears it would be less likely to break the gear. I have thought this all along but then again I have been going through these gears!

i would look else were to the root cause.. maybe the tailrotor gear has some thing to do with the chiping .. a sharpe or broken edge on it .
but i have two 8 yr old ones and no wear and i used the 2 paper gauge. and there fine

Gear

I have always used one paper shim a piece of writing paper is good guage, also make sure the main gear is not out of line with the pinon gear this is most of the problem why it chips also if you hit the tail blade on the ground it could cause it to chip when the gear skips, did you use the shims under the main gear to take up any slack there might be

nexus

Thanks for the replies. I do not use any shims at all. I will check this area closely. The metal gears all appear to be ok too. I will use the paper from now on and see if that helps. Thanks again.

I recently stripped a gear on my Nexus due to a slightly bent starter shaft. If the shaft is even the slightest bit bent it can cause insane problems! I suggest taking it out, looking at it and also inspecting the other gears for wear or sharpened edges!

Hope that helps you out!
I'll get my nexus in the air one of these days

Main gear chip

Do you have aluminum frame insert or the original plastic inserts? They crack and allow the frame to seperate where the rear tail drive gear is. The tail drive gear then rides up on the main gear under load.

problem solved!

Well, after chewing up a fourth main gear yesterday I pulled the Nexus apart completely. I looked over the metal teeth for any sharp spots or jagged edges but could find nothing wrong. Then I began to disassemble the start shaft assembly when I noticed a hairline crack running across the right side frame just above the top bolt which holds the starter shaft. It was a clean break that I just could not see. I've never seen one so precise. Obviously when I tried to fly the frame would distort resulting in a misallignment of the gears. I also had three hex inserts that had been broken inside the frame halves too. I can't believe I didn't see this crack before.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Aluminum inserts

Make sure you replace those cheap plastic inserts with the aluminum ones. It was the first upgrade I did to my Nexus. Those plastic inserts had caused me alot of problems. I'm not sure why Kyosho used those cheap plastic inserts. Its the number one thing on the Nexus that Kyosho should have replaced! I think the aluminum insert are around $20.

Re: Aluminum Inserts

I too had 3 broken plastic inserts the last time I disassembled my Nexus.

I've looked for the aluminum inserts at a few LHS's and Tower Hobbies with no luck finding them.

Where can I buy them for my Nexus?

Gear mesh.

I struggled for several hours trying to get the correct mesh on both sides of the main gear. I could get the correct amount of mesh on ONLY one side at a time. I ended up putting a 10 thous. shim behind the tail drive gear to move it forward so that the gear mesh was right on the money. After I put the shim in place I have had over 15 gallons of fuel and no gear striping.

I also put the aluminum insets in instead of the plastic ones. I lost 5 plastic inserts in one crash. The aliminum ones work so much better.
