Where can I get some info on FAI competition. How is it scored? Where can I get a schedule of manuvers? What levels of competition are there?

Thanks,

Lou

Toward the bottom you will see "radio controlled Helicopter", if you click on it will open as a pdf (acrobat) document and answer all you questions.

Short answers:
AMA - governed schedule:
Class 1 (novice class - hovering maneuvers)
Class 2 (intermediate class with both hovering and basic aerial maneuvers)
Class 3 (advance class - complex hovering and aerial maneuvers)

FAI-F3C - Expert / Masters Class - extreme complex hovering and borderline 3D aerial maneuvers. F3C class maneuvers schedule will change in 2006 that will add more aggressive 3D aerial maneuvering.
Also, this class is also refered to as the international class.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE......

Go download the AMA 2005 RC Heli Competition Regulations. Setup a contest box as described in it. Get you a partner in helping you spot your heli over the cones (WalMart has the ones you'll need) as you fly the Class 1 maneuvers. (*I say class 1, not knowing your skill level, so that would be a good place to start). Mind you, you don't have to start at Class 1. Study the 3 different classes of maneuvers, and start in the class you will be comfortable with.

Also, if you haven't been to a contest before, GO. There is one coming up in Nashville, TN. Look for it in the 'Events Section' here on RR. Not only will it help expose you to what is involved in contest activities, but you can also get valuable help in setups with your machine, and radio!
Many of the folks that are posting here about FAI/F3C setups and contest flying will be there! (GM1, Wayne Mann, Dr. Ben, Don Wade, to name a few). By attending and participating, you soon get the idea of what is involved, and start becoming comfortable with your new setups on your machine. Not only that, but you'll meet some of the most enjoyable fellow pilots to be around! The fun we have during, and afterwards at dinner, is something you'll have to experience! Unforgettable!

Keep in mind, the skills needed to fly Competition is akin to the skills of a 'Commercial Pilot' in full scale aircraft. "Precision" flying is what you'll be doing! It will make you a better R/C Pilot (IMHO), and prepares you better for handling those unexpected surprises that we all encounter from time to time!

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE..and then, PRACTICE so more!
LOL
I think you get the idea!

Thanks again...

I have downloaded the manuvers from the AMA site and I will start practice on the sim in about ten minutes. I have also downloaded the '06 F3C schedule of manuvers, this looks pretty gnarly but I will have a go anyway.

Niche-

You must run before you can fly. One can not fly into flying.

With that in mind, I will start start with class I and work my way up.
I figure I should treat like getting licenses in Gran Turismo on the PS2.

I look forward to metting and one day competing along side you.

Thank you again,

Lou
