Just done the hawk pro, testing at the weekend based the set up on my Bell 47 but only 1 lithium pack. Will keep you posted. All The Best!

Well it flew right out of the box! Fantastic! I did have the giro working backwards but with a click of the switch off it went. Changed my mind about the Li-Pos, I'm now using X2 3s-4p's 22.2volts @ 8000mah, single pack won't fit. This set-up is for a non-3D application. The head speed is a very smooth 1500rpm and it will carry a good payload, if you get my drift!! It has plenty of power but it is not 3D frantic. For that you would need larger Li-Pos with an extra 8+volts that will make it boogie, this ship will accommodate that but it's no good for what I want it for. Will post pics on Monday it looks very clean bit like a baby Joker.

Hi guys
I am really interested in this electric conversion on the Hawk, as I am thinking of going down this road myself.
I also thought that I could use a JR venture 30, my intention is for it all to end up in some sort of scale fuzz, with an all up weight of 5 kilos.
My intention with either machine was to use a Mega 22/45/ 3e motor, a Castle 60 amp speed control, and twin 3s3p Lipos, and the kit manufacturers driveline, I.E. no gearing mods, but possibly use the clutch, which might give the head a more scale looking spinup.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.
Reasons for using the above mentioned gear, is all economics, the products are well priced, and of reputable quality and performance, the parts are cheap, and an Englishman Jim "Davey" now living in the States, used that very motor in a Huey conversion, published in Model Helicopter World, in June 2004.
Look forward to hearing from you tinkerers.

Well Folks my Century Hawk converstion had a rather grand first run.
It was Flow/Tested/Thrashed by one of those 3D Looney Tunes chaps from Century UK at the Sandown show (England). I'm really glad I upped the headspeed to 1850 rpm as it was very windy. It's the first time I've ever let a 3D johnney loose on one of my creations, but once he had finished his raw steak, they unchained him and opened his cage. He then promptly caught the scent of the transmitter on the flight line and bolted strait for it, gave a sniff off the air and next thing I knew my new Electric Hawk was just a blur! Now fortunately for me I had an interpreter who understands 3D speak (Colin, very nice chap). I asked him if he would ask it if it was any good. At that very moment the 3D looney flashed a snarl at me, I took a step back. My interpreter (Colin) said that he seemed very happy, so I took one step forward again. With that the 3D johnney was quickly sedated and the transmitter prised away from him. And so there you have it praise indeed, and the helicopter back safe and sound and in one piece. Although there are some teeth marks on the boom, and the tail fin has been chewed a bit. I'm not sure quite how and when he did that!
Here are some pics of myself (Bloke with Hair) and Skeeter Pilot looking VERY relaxed at the controls BEFORE the Sandown show.

Oh Yes, Hacker C50-16XL motor, Jeti 70 amp controler, X2 3s-4p Li-Pos
and a 20 tooth Joker pinion. 35 Mins flight time.
Lovely!!!

Hi There, well if I fly it in a hover it's 25 mins non stop, but flying around 30-35 mins seems to be about the time I'm up for. People at shows ie. Vario Scale Day this weekend, are surprised how long it flies for. I must say at this point though, that I don't lock the throttle at 100 per cent. This is because I like the blade slap of a semi auto approach touch and go, so maybe flying style is a factor. I do now that my Lama which has a similar set-up, has a rather less impressive 15 mins duration. The models do weigh the same, so I'm not sure why this is. However looking at my flying style, with the Lama it seems to be fast and more agressive. I lock the throttle at 100 per cent and fly on the pitch. This is because I was advised that with a 3 bladed head on a windy day you can't let the rotor speed decay or it will pitch up (and it does!). So I guess that is what is chewing the juice. The Bell style of flying is almost floaty by comparison, fast flying does not seem to suit it. and semi autos do sound very impressive and are addictive. It does have a very slow sink rate in a semi auto, and the stick is at 1/4 throttle. The other thing that is interesting is that the Lama Hacker motor gets quite hot, whereas the Bell Hacker motor is barely warm. So I would say that the Lama has to be pulling a fair bit of juice. Hope this is of help.

Hi BellBloke, realy impressive models looking at your photos etc,you certainly seem to have the knack. Does the Hacker motor get warm in the Century Hawk conversion? Is there any forced air cooling on it,fans etc? Just a touch confused about which model we are talking about in the last reply.Lamas or Century Hawk? keep up the good work..

Hi brod, sorry I was talking about the Bell 47 on which the Hacker motor gets barely warm. The Lama gets hot but within tolerance, and the Hawk does have the same mechanics, motor etc as the Bell but it is set up to be more aggressive. It is fairly new to me and carries a heavy camera so I have not timed the flights unladen as it is only used for work now.

Hi Bellbloke, thanks for the quick reply. You say the mechanics are similar between both copters'.Is the gear ratio between motor and blades the same in both helis? same motors? same speed controllers?
Interesting stuff......cheers Brod.......
