hey now you have one too .I just hovered scott greys sulphyde about 3 weeKs ago and he has one of his custom91 os motors in it
and it was super quiet and smooth i hovered it about 3-4 minutes and the wind started to blower hard and the model just sat there that was the first time i had the chance to fly a real fai machine that was set up wright other than don wades and i almost wanted to set mine in a hole and start a fire what a differance between the two machine are then i started to read
what gordy was posting and mine dose not fly that well yet but
after going back through it all of the post made a differance

thank again jeff

thanks for the good info ben it funny you mentioned the problem with gv1 and the rolls i have been having intermiten problems doing my rolls
and i just started using the gv1 in up stairs stuff.
do most guys run the gv1 all the time in normal and idle up or are they going back to just curves

thanks jeff

ps thanks for the info i had the knife out until you just posted this

Gear ratios

I also am running a stock YS 91 with 7.91 gear ratio, but mine don't sound like Wayne's or Dwight's. I run the GV-1 in hover and in the conditions that require me to hover while in idle up, it keeps me from overspeeding under unusual circumstances.
Apologies for not being around much but I am getting married in 8 days and there is a lot of stuff to take care of. Glad to see some others stepping in and taking up the slack.

Jeff,

As a rule of thumb, any maneuver where you're apt to load up the head rather quickly, like the entry to a roll or a hard pull to vertical, you can pretty well bet that the GV-1 will get behind and cost you some power. The best bet is to do the rolls first without it, then curve the other maneuvers as well and see which ones improve when you turn off the governor and run your throttle curve. The difference in the rolls in blatantly obvious.

And no, guys, I'm not a GV-1 hater. I just have found there are places to use it and places not to.

Will semisymmetrical blades do good with the new F3C manouvers for the next season? Or will symmetrical blades be better?

Thanks

Thanks, guys. Wedding is done, everything went well, and she's thrilled. I am now in the process of moving everything and getting set up to get back to flying. Of course it's hurricane season here again and we've already had one (I lost two trees) so it may take a little time. I am working on a MA Stratus for FAI and it looks very promising as it is 1 1/2 lbs lighter than a Pro IIK-T
I think you CAN do the new schedules with semisymmetrical blades BUT I doubt you see many people using them as the symmetricals are much easier to work with.

How do you guys have the Gyro set in Autorotation mode?

I talk to someone and told him I run my GY601 in HH mode all the time, he said you should run non-HH mode in hold mode....

How do you guys set your Gyro's for the different flight modes.

Thanks

Wow - this thread's fantastic.

I just failed my BMFA B test due to hovering instability, so was looking to get some tips, and this just about covers it all !!

I'm normally a 3D junky, so the precision is something I'm trying to improve on dramatically.

Flying a Raptor 50 I guess isn't the best machine for this, but they're great for pushing to the limits as they're so cheap to repair, and easy too.

Cheers,

Darren

Actually, one question I wanted to ask, but I know for my test I was about as ill prepared as I could be (got thousands of excuses why !!), and my engine was out of tune. I'm running a throttle jockey governor, and now I think about it, I guess that would have been making constant adjustments.

For max hovering stability do you normally have the throttle governer on ? - I guess there's no need, but thought I'd ask.

The other thing was HH gyros - if you're in a strong cross wind, I guess that's constantly twitching too. Do you normally run HH for max hovering stability ?

Cheers,

Darren

Autos

I run my GY601 in HH all the time. The problem with that is you MUST be able to get the model straight before entering a maneuver or the gyro will hold the model crooked throughout, and all your aerobatics will look like doodoo.
To enter an auto, I use the following:

I slow the headspeed down to 1700 or so from the 1950 I normally turn when doing aerobatics and establish a good line with the model flying parallel to the flight line. I pull pitch with the motor still on and establish a rate of descent and THEN pull the hold switch. The model doesn't twitch or do anything funny, it just continues as it was.
A lot of guys like to enter the auto from a very high head speed thinking that it will give you more time at the bottom but I find the head speed bleeds off due to drag anyway in the first part of the auto so it's better for me to start at the rpm I want to use during the auto. I find I have plenty left at the bottom to land the model and rarely bounce the model even on the calmest hot days. A word of warning. Do NOT get ham handed with the tail rotor during an auto as it will suck all the energy reserves out of your rotor system and make it difficult to land smoothly. Use just enough TR to face the model in the direction you want to go.

Gordie,

Thanks for the answer.

I have just started practising the 180 degree auto and it is "easier" than I thought, but still difficult to get it perfect at the end. Since I have only done a dussin of them I still need to practice more. The best thing would be for some experienced F3C pilot to guide me in the right direction, but I don't live close to one. I guess I have to gather as much knowledge myself so I can guide other pilots who wants to compete in my area of Sweden.

My plan is to start practicing the new 2006 schedule now so I will be prepared for the long winter ahead. The bad thing is that season 2006 does not start here in Sweden until the end of march.....unless you can stand the cold

2006

I also have started working on the 2006 schedules.......... WHEW!
We are probably going to need to go to a pretty symmetrical setup , something like -10 to +12 degrees. I have done the inside outside eight and it's not too bad if you are comfortable pushing the model while inverted. I did the inverted 360 pirouette with full roll down....... WHOA! You better be 250M high when you try that for the first time. The model is coming down like an anvil while you try to finish the roll. Double flipping maneuver is tough also.

I just bought myself a pair of SAB204 semi-symmetrical blades Well, I can always sell them and get new blades next season. I like them very much when hovering and doing the auto, but they lack a little bit in aerobatics, especially when doing the vertical climbs, if the model goes over the 90 degrees it is hard to put it back....it is just something I have to learn and have learned.

I'll start with Schedule A, and do part of the manouvers. I have never done a rolling stall turn yet.....so I think I'll be in for surprise. I'll manage though.

I am off on thursday for Spain. I am going to drive by Zamora on sunday and stay until monday (only 2 days) to watch (I am sure I have mentioned that before).

The new schedule is going to be a speed and power game. I'm also going to have to increase fuel capacity - alot! How much fuel are folks carrying? DT
