hi guys,
today i was contacted by a person asking for help on setting up a cricket, aparently it was NIB and he just finished assembling it.

i have not seen it yet but what i have found on the web up to now is very little.

i only have experience with the raptor 30, i told this person that i would help him to check it out but that i would not fly it. i donīt feel comfortable flying someone elseīs heli even if it were a raptor.

what hints can you give me?

thanks,
diego

wait till you see it

Heeheehee LOL !!

well, it's a neat little thing, if you could get a collective system on it, it would be fun !!

I had one, it flew 3 very short times,,, mine did not respond to cyclic that much, but although it did seem smooth !!

I had a Cricket which I could not fly for the life of me. It was only after I learned how to fly a Concept 30 that I tried again, and it was a handful. The cyclic response is so slow, and you have to know how to set a heli up well before you try this! I actually hovered it for a few seconds, but after that I retired it, it sat around for more than 10 years, then I sold it a month or 2 ago. Don't miss it a bit!

Don't waist your time. Sell it on ebay and buy something that you can learn on. I learned to fly on a Cricket along time ago and don't reccommend it to any one.

The best way to help this guy would be to tell him to get a Shuttle or a Raptor.

I agree. I tried to hover a Cricket once, as was stated before, it reacted so slowly that it was very hard to fly. It is not a beginners heli.

Well my first heli was a cricket. The thing belongs in a museum not in the hands of a newb. I flew mine for a long time and eventually learned how to fly it.

Set up...well there really is no such thing per say on a cricket. Just set up all the control arms at zero and make sure the swash plate is flat and set the pitch at 4 degrees (I beleve it was) and dont grab the blade to do it. Just get a pece of spring steel and cut two slots in it with a band saw wide enough to fit inbetween the blade straps and twist away. This is also how you set the tracking too. You balance the blades by taking the rotor head off and hanging it by the fly bar, real high tec. Then experement with the tail to find a good center and bobs your uncle.

With a gyro it shuld not be too hard to fly just lead the throttle A LOT! because it is slow to to stop a desent with no colective. To desend dive, dont settle with power or you won't stop till you get to the ground.

well,
he came today with the cricket, and one of those futaba AM brown radios.
actually, the cricket looks cute.
i told him all about the problems he might have, spares, difficulty and specially the difference between a 70īs design and a raptor for example.

i recommended him to get a simulator and maybe start with airplanes first. remember he is a total newbie.

i offered loan him a radio i have lying around with no use for his airplane or helicopter if he buys one, so that he does not have to invest all that money without knowing what to expect.

he left very thankful for the straight no nonsense no sales pitch i gave him.

i hope he follows my advice, he and his son seemed like very nice people very interested in this craziness of ours.

thanks to all for your responses, the cricket seemed like a nice heli to play with on spare time... just for kicks.

I sit here and read all this stuff about how the Cricket is to hard to learn and how it belongs in a museum well I started flying a Cricket in 1980 still own it still fly it and you are all crazy. If you could learn to fly the Cricket you could fly anything else that was out there at the time.I used to have dog fights with another Cricket flyer and fly the_ _ _ _ out of them even loop a fixed pitch heli the only thing you could not do is an auto oh well. The Cricket at the time was a great heli and I would not trade the learning experience I gained from that little whirly bird. And I still get a thrill when I fly it.Own a Gold edition Cricket,GMP Competitor,no gyro,King Cobra,no gyro,Vigor standard,w/gyro,Vigor CS w/gyro and can fly them all.
