What makes em' tic

Any tips to start learning them?

Thanks

Tic Tocs take a bit of work to do properly (and I still can't do them properly).
The problems you'll have will be that the heli will travel, for me, it either goes up or down cause I haven't managed to get my collective timing sorted yet.

What I do is start a backward flip, then when the heli is at about 135 degree angle, then smoothly feed in negative pitch as I push in some forward elevator to push it back over, then when the heli reaches 45 degree angle, feed in positive collective and gently pull back on elevator.

Like I said, I haven't fully sorted this maneuver yet, but you get the idea.

Regards,
Si

I am guessing it takes some fairly fast servos to do properly.. ? (at least-- to do them as fast as CY, TB, or JK)

You cannot do tic tocs well if you have orientation issues. Don't expect to be just learning inverted of barely flipping around and just go out and do tic tocs. A good way to start tic tocs is to flip basically from hover upright to hover inverted and never move. Keep the heli in the same spot and control the tail throughout the manuever. Gradually, increase the speed of the manuever until you aren't going into full hover either right side up or inverted.

Also another trick is to learn how to control heli direction in a vertical attitude. This is a big key to getting non drifting tic tocs. Its a little tough to explain and its even tougher to learn.

When doing a back flip from right side up to inverted, at the vertical point, control the heli like normal. Left cyclic with fly the heli to the left when vertical and vice versa for right cyclic. So if you are backflipping and the heli is drifting to the left, give it right cyclic and the heli will correct its drift. When tumbling(forward flip) from inverted to right side up, at the vertical point, to control the drift the opposite way you control the drift when flipping inverted. This is the tricky part. When the heli drifts to the left at the vertical posistion in this flip, you have to give it LEFT cyclic to correct the drift. Vice versa if the heli drifts to the right, you have to give it RIGHT cyclic to stop the drift. Sheesh, I barely understand what I said.

Anyways, It is really tricky to explain without a diagram or running helicopter I can show you with, but sim time will let you experiment with it. Also, don't forget to control the tail and keep it pointed down. Its all just practice baby, practice.

I'm not a 3der yet but maybe someday , but I do like to read
about some of the maneuvers.
I have a hard time visualizing heli orientation and control movements
when the heli gets in unfamiliar positions.
This improves with practice and flight hours, burning fuel.
So when reading this thread it reminded me of what I made to help
me comprehend some heli positions and control movements.
On the movie "Top Gun" I think they used toy fighter planes on sticks
when teaching a class.
I bought a small toy helicopter and attached a stick to it inline with the tailboom, and used a fine tip
marker on it to indicated direction changes with arrows R,L etc.
Then when thinking about various positions and what control inputs
are needed or what the heli would do with a certain input I can visualize
it no matter what position the heli is in.

Recorded G2 sessions

Hi all,
I was just thinking, do you know what would really help explain some of these stunts? If people that can do them and have G2 could record them and make them available. We, the less skilled, could load them up and slow down the playback while watching the transmitter on the screen. It would allow us to see the trick in real time and then study how it is done. I think it could be a great teaching tool. I've always thught that G2 and the internet can make for some great one to one teaching. I had one session that I got from the G2 website that showed someone doing a funnel and I can watch in slow motion the stick movements. Now I'm nowhere ready to even try this trick but when I am I'll have a good reference point to begin. Over time quite a nice library could be assembled for all to use.

Just my 2¢

I agree, that sounds like an excellent idea. Now, will some of you pros make some files?

I second that. That would be so helpful. Include me in. I would love to see some of these manuevers performed. Someday I will be able to put some of my own up.

Top Gun toys...

The small models are a very good visual aid, when I flew with Todd Bennett he liked to use the foam blade holder to explain tricks and orientation issues.

Try it with your blade holder and stop long enough to think about what you want to do and do it one step at a time and you can figure out how to input the proper controls to accomplish the maneuvor. It's another thing to get it right in the air as you have to deal with all the factors of flying and timing but it really does help visualize stunts.
