Hello,

I tried to post a comment to the topic http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t173847p1/ but it was closed already so I'm creating a new one.

I'm probably opening a huge can of worms here but I have to disagree about the importance 6mm spindles in 30 to 50 size machines.
I'm flying 2 machines that both use 5mm spindles that I have never had an issue with bent spindles. They are a Voyager 50 and a Tiger 50.

Both my Voyager and Tiger have been put through some really agressive 3D and neither has ever had any problems with bent spindles. Now when my dumb thumbs cause contact with mother earth, that's a different story. The very fact that the Voyager and Tiger both had 5mm spindles had no impact on my decision to buy either one.

Personally I think by going to the heavier spindle that now you have a greater chance of breaking other parts like blade grips.

Of course this is just my opinion.

Well you are right...if you make one part stronger, something else is going to break...

But, with people running 2000rpm head speeds, and really stick banging on a heli, you want that 6mm spindle...Although the stock spindle can probably take it, the upgraded spindle is more of a saftey factor..

I personally have never broken a blade grip, but im sure others have..and ive had my share of 90's hit the ground and not stop running

Bending Spindles!!!

I am going to have to agree with jvanscoyk
on this one.....
The 5mm spindle in NOT a problem and very capable of handling the loads that are put on it, and this without "blowing" anything apart.....
I have been flying heli's since 1990 and the only spindle that I have ever bent was due to a crash/boom strike/or something else that stopped the blades a little too suddenly....

But corey11 raises a good point.... and this goes back to the models set up.... and if you overspeed the head, then YES, something is going to give....and hopefully it will be something that will bend/flex and not cause other damage.... but let you land safely....
The 5 mm spindle has been tried and tested and has proven to be more then capable of handleing all but the most undo stresses that could be put on it...
I admit that I have met a few fliers that could bend ANYTHING that they fly.... I have even heard of people bending the spindles in Evo's.... mine is on it's 3rd season with everything still stock and original.... but you can bend it....and on any other machine too I guess!!!!
The bottom line here is that this thread got blown out of proportion, and out of all of the units that are flying out there... there have been (2) people that have bent spindles.
So this is not a safety issue in that respect..but more of a concern of a select few..
But it is good to know that Audacity Models has addressed a concern and will make that part an option to those who feel they need it..
This is one very capable unit.... so get one and give it a try.... you will not regret your choice!!!!

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!

Can you use a Voyager 50 spindle on a Tiger 50? Are all 5mm spindles the same length?

Hey Superman,

They look like they might be the same length but I have never measured them.
Fortunately I have not had a reason to pull the spindle from my Voyager.
Another machine that may be a match is the Shuttle. If you look at the K&S parts list a lot of the spindles that fit a Voyager will also fit a Shuttle. I see no reason not to use them if they are the same length.

Yes you can use a voyager spindle on the Tiger. The Tiger and Voyager share some of the same parts.

3D spindle

You can get a heavy duty 3D spindle from KSJ. # 1383 @ horizon hobby. $ 10.00. Only a crash could bend that one. Tim

What size is a Venture spendle? They have this one at HeliHobby, and it's one of the closer shops

spindle size

That spindle is going to need all new bearings and thrust brgs. The KSJ one I spoke about is hard and larger in the center but tapers to 5 mm at the grip area. The key is the material not just the thickness.

Harder Spindle??

Sorry this is 8 days late! I just bent the spindle on my Tiger in a "light" crash. I was wondering if I shouldn't try to get a harder spindle that would take a little more abuse? But then I thought the same thing that was mentioned earlier and that is, if you go with a harder spindle, won't that just make something else break somewhere else?? In all honesty, I would rather bend a $6 spindle than break a more expensive piece!! Here was my next concern, I know the spindles are made out of some pretty good stuff, ( although, without using the spectrometer, I'm not sure what it is?!? ) but, what are the nuts made out of?? Are they grade 5? Grade 8? or are they softer? The thing is, if your turning at say 1800 - 2000 rpm, what happens if the nut strips out? Ever happen to anyone out there? on anything?

Just a thought.

If the nut comes off I guess you will have to pray that the 2 cent ball link keeps the grip on either that or sit back and enjoy the show Nah in all seriousness I am sure that if the grip did fly off that it would beat itself to death probably a rekit

Turbine

The nuts on the spindle are nylocks with nylon inserts that lock down on the thread, I've been flying now for 2 years and haven't had a nylock nut anywhere on my helis come loose.

I understand that a locknut doesn't come loose from vibration, I was more concerned about the nut failing and the threads stripping out. I was reading somewhere on RR the other day about a crash that happened because a blade came off. He said the nut stripped out and it just came apart in-flight. The conversation there amounted to, " what would have happened if you were hovering in front of yourself and the blade let loose and came your way?" OUCH! I know I wouldn't want one of those blades coming anywhere near me!
Anyway, I was just curious to know if the nuts were good quality or should they be replaced with something better? I understand that this isn't a "common" problem among helis, but then it only has to happen once for someone to get hurt, or worse.

The older I get, the more I tend to think about safety. Not that I don't enjoy a good vacation in the hospital.

Has Never Been a Problem!!!

I have been in heli's since 1990, and have never had one come loose....
I have heard of the spindles that use hex bolts in the ends can come out if the locktite is forgotten.... !!!!!!
But never an issue with the lock nuts.... just make certain not to cross thread and there should be no worry....
So is that Tiger up and running good again???? Stan

Yeah, I had it flying but it had a slight vibration that bugged me so I searched till I found it. Bent spindle. Wasn't bent bad, but it was bad enough to bug me. Hopefully I should have my parts tomorrow or Tues at the latest and then I'll be back up and running. Knowing Audacity's track record for their service, I'm surprised they weren't here on Sat, after all, I ordered them Fri! The last time I ordered from them it was a Wed afternoon and I had the stuff Fri!! Now that's service. I have plans to take it down to a field near Harrisburg, PA on this coming Sunday so I want to be sure I have it up and running as smooth as possible. But the down time was OK, it gave me a chance to take care of some other little things I was putting off. haha

I agree in that I have never seen a spindle nut fail in over 15 years of flying helis.

On another note, after a 2 month break from flying because of neck surgery I went out flying this morning with the Tiger.
A few weeks ago I installed a Throttle Jockey and a friend checked it out for me. This was the first time with me behind the controls since installing the governor. The governor has got the head speed locked in at 1900rpm. This is the first time I've flown something spinning that fast. The Tiger handled the revs well and I'm glad I spent the time balancing the fan after installing the magnet.
I did a couple loops and the machine tracked like it was on rails then it happened......the muffler came loose. hehe.
So my day was cut short by a missing muffler screw but I had fun anyway.
I got home, replaced the screw using red loctite this time and I should be good to go.
It's good to be back in the air!

Good to hear you're flying again!! It's also good to hear that the muffler didn't come off in-flight , ...you could put an eye out with that thing! HAHA
