Aerobatic 3D Contest > stall turns seem easier than circuits.......

hi,
am i stupid or is this normal? i feel a lot more confident doing stall turns than i do doing the downwind-base-final turn on a circuit.

on the circuits i get very disoriented whe turning into me, of course if i do the turns away from me there is no problem.

the further away or higher i am the harder it becomes.

any help here?

thanks, diego

Hi Diego,

Same for me here, although I think it is better to do the circuit training to be prepared for the "nasty" thing during a stall turn. I try to stay away from the faster (but arguably smoother) stall turn figure 8's or O's even though It gives me a rush (really thinking I'm improving ).

Will first push myself into nose-in before going wild and fast.

good luck

Guys,

If you MASTER Nose-In hovering - both circuits and stall-turns will become a breeze. Actually, all 3D will become easier - once you MASTER Nose-in.

You have got to learn the basics before trying to jump into the harder stuff.

Even the most difficult maneuvers employ the basics in some way or another.

i work a lot at nose in, i have not "mastered" it i keep a stable hover, can transition to nose in or any position in between from both directions, where i do need more work is at nose in translations, circles around me and circles in front of me.

Nose in "Its not that hard"

You need to learn to Crawl before you can walk or run.

I have been helping newcomers to this hobby learn to fly for quite some time.
I have my students learn nose in before they ever transition to Forward flight.
Once they can do a slow Pirouette at eye level land and take off nose in then they are ready for forward flight.

I always have students that are in a rush to impress. I hate to work this type of student They are the ones that are always crashing and never really become GOOD. They are the ones that are trying to do loops before they can do a decent approach they are the ones to always take the easy way. Sure the basic training maneuvers are boring and wont impress your friends But unless you learn them first you will never see your full potential !!

Sure some of my headstrong students have begun learning 3D but they will never be really good at it because they put the cart before the horse. They started out by learning bad habits and as we all know Unlearning a bad habit is harder then learning the right way the first time

Suggested progression

Basic tail in hover
45 degree hover both sides
90 degree hover both sides
Slow partial pirouette from R90 degree hover to opposite L90 degree hover
R135 degree hover both sides

And finally Slow R135 degree hovering turn to nose in

With out Sim time most students accomplish this within 2 to 3 gallons in a 30 size heli

Next we start with autos Yes autos before we ever begin forward flight
I want then to learn how to hit a switch
I have them Start with about an 8 inch hover with the training gear on and hit the switch try and set it down as soft as you can

From this point on my students are not allowed to land there heli under power!!! They must land from a hovering AUTO
Most can move onto nose in hovering Autos just after just a few tail in Hovering autos

Anyhow I’m sure you get the Idea. All my students that have followed this outline have gone on to become great pilots quite a few have even surpassed my ability’s the ones that have not crash all the time trying maneuvers they are not ready for..

For the students that crash While using my outline under my guidance I will repair there heli for them free –parts cost
The ones that crash because they deviated from the flight plan either repair there own or can pay me $25.00 an hour to do it..

Pepito,
Check out the flying lessons on my site www.littlerotors.com/flyinglessons/

They could be of some help to you.

panos,
a little more confidence please.......
i started rc flying with airplanes, at the time i had little intention of flying RC helicopters (although i am a commercial rotorcraft pilot). just for kicks when i knew how to fly airplane trainers i bought a raptor.

i was immediately hooked, actually i have quit flying planes and i am completely "devoted" to my raptor.

the most striking difference i find between the two, is that i WANT to practice different maneouvers over and over again with the helicopter, something that i did not feel with the planes.

so, what i am saying is that i am willing to learn the slow but fruitful way to fly rc helicopters.

blazen,

i just got from the field, lot´s of nose-in-work, circles around me, circles in front of me, landing and taking off between each maneouver. pirouettes to nose in and to 90deg each side. and a few autos from a hover at the end of each tank, all from about 3ft high.

now, i can do nose in very good, including hover and pirouettes
i still need work on sideways movement when doing circles, the altitude is +/- a couple of feet. the hardest part is to maintain a constant translational speed. specially to the left.

the TAIL IN autos from hover are pretty good, some bounces, i am not consistent yet.... i have not tried nose in yet....

the hardest for me was landing while nose in, i get plenty nervous, so there is a bit of wondering around, but i made myself work on stability before setting it down.
the take off is very good, not as in tail in but almost there.

blazen, if you don´t mind when i feel i have accomplished what you told me i will get back to you for the next step.

thank you very very much,
diego
