AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

That's the sound of me crashing tonight. Yup, pieces everywhere. Don't know exactly what happened, engine died about 20' up and right before it touched down I gave it full stick to try to soften the auto and the engine came back. About 40' to the right so fast I couldn't keep up and then the engine died again only this time it was moving and only about 2' off the ground. Nothing a novice like me could do but pick up the pieces and carry them back to the bench. Oh well, it's all part of the game. I just wish I had crashed doing something really cool instead of of something stupid like the engine croakin'. I know I was getting more aggressive tonight and that I've been running the engine really rich to break it in. I don't know if it was just too rich for what I was doing or what. I'm definitely going to look into it further.
Guess I'll be talking to John this week. I hope he can get the parts to me quicker than he got my registration to me ...which I still haven't gotten! That's a whole other story in itself. I guess we'll see.

Running Too Rich

turbinewannabe

It sounds as if you already figured out what caused your sudden realization that gravity really does SUCK!!!!!!!!!
We have all been there.... so get that parts list together and to John, and I'll bet he has the "stuff" you need to you quickly.....
If the engine was running too rich it could have loaded the plug and then it must have cleared itself, while at low throttle where the idle setting would let it try to run again, and now clear, when you hit the throttle the plug was back up to temp, and you got full power again, if only for a moment..

Dust it off and do it again!!!!!!!!!!! The better you get at flying, the better you get at limiting the damage!!!!! (SOMETIMES)

Stan
ps. If I send you a canopy along with your parts would you paint it for me???

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!

ahhh man I am really sorry to hear that!!! Maybe your engine loaded up and REALLY bogged on ya and then spat out the junk and came back to life only to load up again, try leaning it out and see if that helps. Once again I am really sorry to hear about your crash! Also might want to check that your throttle servo is working ok because maybe the servo failed and caused it to go to idle and then maybe the servo tried to work again as you tried to add positive pitch. Something to check, I hope you get your parts and get that baby back up in the air!

Failsafe

i don't know if you are running pcm or not. but that happened to me on my futura and it was going into batt failsafe, check your batteries.!!!
c-ya Ron

the way batt failsafe works is the radio shuts down the engine to idle, then if you go to low throttle stick it resets the throttle so it works aagain and then you need to get it down, with the suprise and the throttle going into failsafe again at a couple of feet, bad bad bad, don't know if this is what happened but it has happened to me, no more NiMh for me.

Please cancel my clearance, I have the field in sight.

Well, I got all the parts ordered today. John said he would have them out this afternoon. ( my wife will be soo happy! hehe. ) I'm happy! Any way, I'm runnung a PPM radio and the servo is good and the batts were definitely charged. I'm sure of that after a little incident I had last week. but we won't go there. I think it's just the fact that it was really rich. And I also agree with John, he said the plug my have gone bad. So, a new plug, check the fuel, put it back together and we'll try it again. If this keeps up we may have to start a new thread!

HA HA! Success!

Looked around the basement tonight and saw a broken Concept, a broken Tiger and I just couldn't take it. I had to fly somethin' ! So I broke out old faithful. ( my trainer plank. ) Man, I haven't flown fixed wing in awhile! But I can say I didn't crash!! Sure is different than a heli, made me remember how small my backyard is! Had fun, got it out of my system, now I need parts. Come on UPS!!!!!

Andy, you didn't specify how you wanted them so I sent them Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation - which should make it to PA in time for the weekend.

That'll be fine, I'm not one of those guys that needs everything right now. At least most of the time I thought maybe I'd take a friend of mine out this weekend and fly fixed wing anyway. He's been wanting to learn for awhile now so I figured I'd put him on the buddy box. Wish I had someone to put me on a buddy box for the Tiger!! I'm dying do some loops and rolls! I can do them with my eyes shut on the sim, but we all know real life tends to be a little more difficult. Sunday is Mother's day so I won't be flying then either. But you can bet next week we'll be up and flying!

PS - hey, did you notice, I finally reached Heliman status... I'm so happy.. ( tear, tear, small wave ) I really have strange sense of humor. Typing just doesn't seem to capture it. You should've heard me laugh when I crashed my Concept. and that really wasn't funny?!?

That just means you are spending way too much time in front of the PC. Son step away from the keyboard, grab your transmitter and get some fly'n done.

I spend a ton of time on the sims and I still crash. Oh well, nothin' a few hundred... er, uh, ...thousand dollars can't fix! I just got back form JES Technical in Linglestown. I spent almost 2hrs talking to Joe, the owner. He's been in business for about 17 yrs. Heck of a nice guy, seems to really know his stuff. Had me laughing tears . I'll definitely be going back. I plan on taking the Tiger down in about 2 weeks to fly with some of the other guys in the area down there. Really looking forward to spending some time with some other pilots!! Hope it's a calm day, I need all the help I can get!

Oh yeah, Hey Foxden, my wife hates bagels and coffee, now what do I do??
( I don't think she much cares for the field either, and that's the backyard!!)

That's a tough one, hmmmm well get her a hobby might be the only thing left. I made mine a promise I'd be home around noon so I could get my Saturday lawn chores done, that way we have the afternoon together if she isn't working and wants to do something, I've been flying every weekend for almost 2 years and she hasn't complained.

It's something that I do with my younger son and allows us some quality time together, to be honest my wife doesn't come to the field either, she also didn't find it to amusing when I came home with a hummingbird for her to fly... haha but that's another story.

Yeah, I shouldn't complain too much about my wife. She's actually been prettty good about all my ventures over the years. ( We've been married for almost 18yrs! ) She used to go to the field with me but she lost interest. Now she just wants to go to craft shows I'd rather stick an ice pick in my ear and spend the day in the ER. Just kidding. My kids don't really care for this heli thing yet either. I think it's a little more work than my son's interested in, but I'm thinking about bringing home a heli for him just to see if I can change his mind. And hey, if he doesn't like it, I can always give it to my wife for mothers day! HOOO HOOO!! would that be an interesting day!! Maybe if I 'd wrap some dead weeds around it and hang it on the wall she'd like it! HAHAHAH! We have enough of those dead grapevine wreaths and other kinds of fake flowers in our house that I was thinking about telling my buddy to bring his shotgun over and we could start kicking for rabbits in the living room!!

Oh man, I hope my wife never reads this. I'll be dead meat.
