Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > New Falcon flying and motor brake-in, the movie,,,

I put 3 tanks threw my new Falcon (OS 46) today,,, smooth, fast, responsive and boy she wanted to climb, but you guys already knew that, right !! I built her with the 46 because next spring I want to build the Century Bell 47g, that's when I will swap this 46 for a 50. Anyway, all she needed was 4 clicks on the Aileron trim to trim her, and 2 turns on the throttle linkage ends,,, that's it,,, it was great !!

For the brake-in,,,
Before mounting the motor in the heli, I filled the motors crankcase with Synthetic 2 stroke oil (Belray 2 stroke oil ), without the glow plug and with 2 nuts on the crankshaft I turned over the motor with my cordless drill for about 4 minutes, stopping a couple times to add more oil, then I cleaned her up and mounted it in the heli,,, at the field I added 1 once of caster oil to a half gallon of Byrons 15% nitro 20% Synthetic (now 22% Synthetic/Castor blend), 1 once is a little less than 2% to a half a gallon, then I added a few more drops of castor to the helis fuel tank for it's first tank of flight,,, she started right up on that first tank, she was real rich but that's what I wanted, and she ran cool and smooth,,, I have about 3 more tanks left on that half gallon with the castor oil in it, when that's gone I'll run heli fuel without adding anything. I believe a glow motor should be heavily oiled (overly oiled) on it's first tank of fuel, and then the usually rich running motor of course,,, this is how I used to brake-in my boat motors...

Thanks Jim, very helpful information. I'll try for my next new engine.

brake-in

You see when you turn over a new glow motor by hand, you can actually hear the motors piston and ring rubbing or scraping the inside of the cylinder !!, after I filed the crankcase with oil and turned it over with the cordless drill this scraping sound was gone,,, I would suggests to mix a little Castor oil with the 2 stroke oil before doing this, Castor oil is an excellent lubricant for a 2 stroke but it stains as it burns and it can gum up too,,, a thick motor oil supplement such as STP or some other thick oil supplement could be used instead of a 2 stroke oil, and you could get away without using the Castor if you don't have it...

Jim,

When you clean the engine do you also clean inside too? what about the crank bearing? before you start the engine do you give a drop oil or something?

cleaning

No I did not oil the outer bearing, I'm sure that OS uses the finest quality made bearings, and I'm sure they are oiled when manufactured, and you don't want to mix the oils !!,,, I just cleaned the outside of the case, I covered the outer bearing, I put a glow plug in the head and I plugged the carb and exhaust port, then I use a carburetor cleaner to get the oil off, then around the carb I used a clean rag drenched in alcohol to quickly get the carburetor cleaner off,,, that's all...

And no I did not clean the inside of the motor, I think the manufacturing standards of today's motors are much better than 10 years ago, I do know that 10 years ago for one of my boat motors I would have taken it apart and checked for burs and shavings, and I would not spry a cleaner in a new unassembled ringed motor because it could leave deposits and remove the oil from the inside bearing and remove the oil from the ring groove on the piston,,, if you do spin your motor over (less glow plug), filled with 2 stroke oil or a good heavy oil like STP (an auto oil supplement), after you will notice that the sliding sound of the piston and ring will be quieter, that would be a lot better than just throwing it in and starting it, but a lot of people do just start a motor without doing anything to it and never have trouble with it !!,,, we all have our own ways,,, but I must admit I did not do all this to my SO 32, and it did take a little longer to start and brake in, that's why I did this to my new OS 46 !!

Now, if you talk to a REAL RC boat racer, he will tell you never never never even turn the crankshaft on a new glow motor before you can take it apart clean it and lap your piston to the cylinder sleeve !!, but all fast boat motors are ABC motors anyway, and a good racing boat motor runs a good 10,000 RPMs higher than a heli motor !!
And I have read in RC boat magazines that after disassembling and cleaning and reassembling a new ABC motor guys will lap there pistons by filling there motors with WD40 and then spin them with a electric drill !!
