e-Align T-REX 250-450-500-600 > which pinion for Neumotor 1105/3y

Hey Guys,

I'm building my TRex and I have a Neumotor 1105/3y for it with a 4S pack. I noticed on the threads that talk about the 1105/3y with a 4S that a 9T pinion is recommended for this combo. However, only the 11T pinion in the stock kit will fit on that shaft (2.3mm, I think). Is the 9T pinion better for this setup, and if so, anybody know where I can get a 9T pinion for this motor that will work in the TRex?

Thanks!

I heard the 11T was the way to go. I also am putting a Trex together with the nuemotor and 4s pack. You can buy the HPI pinions that are used for and micro RS4. They have the 2.3mm you need.

Did you notice how long the shaft is on your neumotor?

Tman,

I'm not sure how long it is, but I did have to mount the pinion with its top about 1.8 inch or so higher than the top of the shaft to get it to mesh with the maingear correctly. It did fit OK though. I filed a flat on the motor shaft (being very careful to cover up the motor to keep the filings out) for the pinion's set screw to grab onto.

I get 2800 hs with a 9 tooth pinion on 4s. I am using a Like 90 pinion I got from Modefos.

Hey Bob:
An 11T pinion will give way too much HS to the point of danger if you have those cheap stock blades with a 4S pack.
You can get 8T and 9T Like90's or Helihobby has some as well.
I also got some from GrandRC Hobbies:
8 Tooth 2.3 Bore PIN102 $ 3.99
9 Tooth 2.3 Bore PIN104 $ 3.99
I started with 8T on the Neumotor and am profiling performance with
an analyser then will try the 9T.
A bit of advice with these pinions:
They do not have grubs to lock on the shaft. You can glue them on
with JB weld or red locktite but that's a real committment and I had one pinion let go before doing that.
So I went ahead and drilled and threaded 2 holes for 2mm grub screws in them then filed flats on the motor shaft. That together with a little blue locktite holds tight but still let's you pull the pinion to change later.
I am currently trying the Hacker B20/15L and Neumotor 3y with 8T and 9T on an analyser. With the present weather I probably wont' have something more to report until springtime.

11t is fine if you are running 3S packs. Why not use the 9t pinion from Align if you are running 4S? You can get a pack with 9t, 10t and 11t 2.3mm bore pinions for like $3.60. Align part# HZ020

Raytor,

Thanks very much for the info. I have the 13T pinion on there now. I set up the throttle curve (with the CC35 in governor mode) to give me a HS of 2000 in normal, and 2200 in idleup. This is less than full throttle on the curves. I think it will be OK for initial testing (it hasn't flown yet), but I was thinking that the 9T pinion would let the motor spin up faster for the same HS which might be more efficient.

I ordered the 9, 10, 11 tooth pinion set for the 2.3mm shaft from fxaeromodels (part number HZ020) and it says that those pinions come with a grub screw. I hope they work OK...

Bob

Dnam - just saw your post. I did find that pinion kit, but It took me awhile to find somebody with that part number in stock, but I finally did. Hopefully, it will get here soon... thanks!

The surest holding method without a set screw is to solder on the pinion. Slot car guys have been doing this for decades. It's kinda tricky and easy to mess up the pinion if you tin the gear's teeth. The arm shaft has to be tinned and also the bore on the pinion. I use the acid flux that comes with hobby silver solder for cleaning before tinning. You can use fine sandpaper and regular flux also. The stuff I use was called StayBright Silver Solder. Great Planes has this silver solder w/flux and I don't think it's called StayBright anymore. After the pieces are tinned apply heat and slide em together. Be sure to clean off the flux when finished.Motor spray works. Also oil the bb's.
I would practice a bit with old brushed motors and pinions before attempting with the good stuff.

Can you bore the 9 teeth pinions to 3mm ??? Will there be enough meat left?

Thanks,
Mike
